This paper aimed to examine the private educational expenditures of salary and wage earners's households by income 5 group and educational attainment. The empirical period runs from 1990Q1 to 2005Q4. It is important to note that whether an assumption of linearity leads to the inference of stationarity or non-stationarity in deviations from equilibrium educational expenditure. I applied the ADF tests to examine the stationarity of each variable. The optimal lag length of the ADF test was chosen by AIC and SC. The appropriate lag appeared to be one, and this enabled a
rejection of the null hypothesis of nonstationarity. After finding the individual time series to be I(1), I applied the EG and GPH tests to examine the cointegration of variables. The statistics failed to reject the null of “no cointegration” between educational expenditures and incomes for all cases.
These findings supported the validity of an equilibrium relationship among the variables in the cointegrating equation. The result also suggested that there was considerable variation in the adjustment speed to the last period's disequilibrium, with high school group having the largest and graduate group, the smallest. The impulse response functions showed that income shock stimulated an increase in educational expenditures of all classes, and decayed very slowly.

소득분배에서의 양극화가 사교육분야에서도 나타나고 있다. 이에 따라 본고는 소득계층과 교육계층에 따른 사교육비 지출패턴을 밝히는데 연구의 목적을 두었다. 먼저 단위근 검정과 공적분 검정을 통해 변수와 모형의 안정성을 확보한 후 오차수정계수를 도출하였다. 그 결과 소득계층이 높을수록 사교육비 조정속도가 느리고 소득계층이 낮을수록 사교육비 조정속도가 빠르게 나타났다. 이에 비해 예상과 달리 학력수준이 높을수록 사교육비 축소속도가 빠르고 학력이 낮을수록 사교육비 축소가 완만하게 이루어졌다. 또한 소득계층과 학력이 높아짐에 따라 소득증가에 대한 사교육비 증가비율인 소득탄력성이 낮은 것으로 나타나 소득계층과 학력이 높을수록 소득증가분을 사교육에 더 적게 투입한다는 것을 보여주었다. 그러나 소득계층과 교육계층에 관계없이 모든 계층에서 사교육비의 소득탄력성이 1보다 클 뿐만 아니라 시간이 흐름에 따라 크기가 점차 커져 사교육시장이 과도하게 팽창되고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
