Liturgical inculturation in the Korean Christian Church! This may sound radical and sensational, especially to the Korean Protestants in the 21st century. In fact, however, it is not a new concept. Throughout the history of Christian liturgy, there has been evidence of examples of liturgical inculturation, such as the liturgical revisions in the Reformation and the recent liturgical movements which adapted contemporary cultures into the liturgy.
Therefore, my attempt of liturgical inculturation in Korean Protes- tantism is thoroughly based on the history of Christian liturgy and its sequence to engage inculturation, not a radical liturgical movement.
When making the Western styles of liturgy definitive and eradicating Korean culture from the Korean Protestant liturgy, the early Protestant missionaries in Korea were disconnecting the historical continuity of liturgical inculturation. As a result, the liturgical forms and contents in the
Korean Protestant Church have become almost the same as those in the American Protestant Church. In this situation, modern Korean Protestants should restore liturgical inculturation based on the Christianhistory, so that they may experience God more effectively and more naturally through the liturgy filled with their cultural characteristics.

“한국적 예배” 하면, 왠지 급진적으로 들린다. 적어도 21세기 한국에 살고 있는 개신교인들에게는 더욱 그렇다. 하지만, 이는 전혀 새로운 개념이 아니며, 기독교 역사에 철저히 뿌리를 두도 있다. 예배의 문화화 (Liturgical Inculturation)의 예는 기독교 역사에서 쉽게, 그리고 여러 곳에서 발견된다. 하지만, 1세기 초대교회 이후 실천되어온 예배의 문화화(Liturgical Inculturation)의 맥이 한국 개신교에서 끊어진다. 미 선교사들은, 한국 개신교 예배에서의 “다양성 안에서의 연합, 그리고 연합 안에서의 다양성(unity in diversity and diversity in unity)”을 추구하기 보다는, 한국 개신교 예배를 자신들의 것과 똑같이 만들려는 “예배의 획일화(liturgical uniformity)”의 우를 범하였던 것이다.
따라서, 한국 개신교인들은, 19세기 말 한국 교회에서 단절된 예배의 문화화(Liturgical Inculturation)를 다시 부활시켜야 한다. 즉, 한국인의 정서에 맞게, 독특한 한국 문화로 가득 찬, 창의적이고 효율적인 예배를 통하여, 살아 계신 하나님을 경험하고, 그 경험을 우리 이웃과 나눌 수 있는, 바빌론 포수로부터의
한국교회 예배 해방의 날을 위해, 현대 한국 기독교인들은 자신들의 시각을 넓히고, 기독교 역사에 근거한 예배 개혁을 착수해야 한다.
