The fairy tales are important media which help the children in the process of development to overcome the cases of anxiety and difficulty that they are easily faced with in real world. In this study, Oscar Wilde's「The Happy Prince」which early childhood teachers had recommended were analyzed from the psychoanalytic point of view and the direct response of young children to the tales were investigated. This analysis made us to realize the influence of fairy tale which the children usually read. It showed that it was important for the writers to write a new fairy tale or to review the existing tales carefully and the teachers should be carefully in selection of the fairy tales for the children.

동화는 발달과정에 있는 유아들이 현실 세계에서 직면하는 많은 불안과 어려움들을 극복하는 기제로서 중요한 역할을 하는 매체이다. 본 연구에서는 시공을 초월하여 오랫동안 읽혀지고 있는 명작동화 중 오스카 와일드의「행복한 왕자」를 정신분석학적으로 해석해보고, 또 이에 대한 유아들의 직접적인 반응을 조사함으로써 단일 분석 기법이 갖는 한계를 극복함과 동시에 향후 동화의 개작이나 창작에 대한 일련의 지침을 마련하고자 하였다. 이와 같은 분석을 통해 유아들의 일상에 깊숙이 자리하고 있는 동화의 영향력에 대해 다시 한 번 고찰할 수 있었으며, 이러한 과정에서 동화의 집필과 선정 그리고 개작에 있어서 주의를 기울여야 한다는 당위성을 찾을 수 있었다.
