Jātaka, one of Buddhist folk tales, is a sutra that was created between 2000 B.C. and the 6th century. That describes the former life of Buddha, and is drawing attention from academic circles as the first collection of fairy tales in the world. The purpose of this study was to present music programs for preschoolers by applying Kodály's music education theory to Jātaka, the Buddhist folk tale that could contribute to early childhood education and be usable as one of fairy tales, as Zoltan Kodály's music education put stress on nationality and tradition and attached importance to young children's active participation and music experience. The types of stories that could be applicable as a medium of music education were selected from Jātaka by 30 preschool educators and experts, and what sorts of components associated with music education were included in the selected stories were analyzed based on Kodály's music education theory. And then a Kodály's preschool music education programs were constructed. The brief findings of the study were as follows: First, 15 stories in the Buddhist folk tale Jātaka were usable as a vehicle of preschool music education, and each story dealt with six music education areas, including listening, singing, instrument education, appreciating, a sense of harmony, music notation/reading and a sense of rhythm. Second, songs and their words were composed based on Jātaka in consideration of the above-mentioned music education areas, and those songs were tested by 40 would-be teachers who majored in early childhood education and paedology. Kodály's music education activities were prepared by utilizing those songs, and 30 programs were contained in the activities, involving recorder activity emphasized by Kodály.

불전설화 자타카(本生談)는 기원전 2000년에서 6세기 경 형성된 경전으로 부처님의 전생을 담은 이야기로서, 세계최초의 동화집으로 학계의 관심을 받고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 유아교육적 가치를 지니고 동화로서 조명이 가능한 불전설화 자타카에 코다이의 음악교육 방법론을 접목하여 유아를 위한 음악활동 프로그램을 제시하고자 한 바, 이는 졸탄 코다이의 음악교육이 민족성과 전통을 강조함으로써 유아들의 적극적 참여를 통한 음악적 경험을 기본으로 하기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 우선 불전설화 자타카 중 유아를 위한 음악교육적 매체로 활용 가능한 이야기 15편을 선정한 바, 이것의 음악교육적 요소는 듣기, 노래 부르기, 악기지도, 감상하기, 화성감 기르기, 기보력과 독보력, 그리고 리듬감 기르기 등의 6개 하위 영역을 포함하고 있었다. 이러한 음악적 영역을 토대로 자타카를 작사․작곡하고 코다이 유아 음악교육 활동을 30개 프로그램으로 구성하였다.
