The present study examined the characteristics of Yeongheo’s Buseoljeon as a romantic novel and its meanings in the history of Korean novel. Buseoljeon is a novel included in Yeongheo’s Anthology, a collection of Buddhist priest Yeongheo’s writings, and it has been recognized as a Buddhist story. The present study made a reflective review of previous researches on this novel, and examined the meanings of Buseoljeon in the history of Korean romantic novel, taking note of characteristics revealed in the pattern of literary tradition of the story. The results discussed in this study are summarized as follows. Interposed poems, which are important narration technique in romantic novels, are crucial components for leading the story in Buseoljeon. It is because, different from other Buddhist literature, interposed poems in Buseoljeon show a
remarkable organic relation between the narration and the time of interposition.
The romanticism in Buseoljeon is revealed by the queerness of characters in the fantasy novel, the figures Yeongjo and Yeonghee, and the skill test of Buseol. When the transmission process of Buseoljeon is examined, a queer legend became a romantic novel, which in turn became the base of Kim Taek‐yeong’s Buseolgeosakjeon. In addition, as Buseoljeon has been transmitted through various literatures, the core of the narration has been arranged into a contemporary novel.
As a romantic novel, Buseoljeon has its meaning in revealing the queer life of a person named Buseol through interposed poems, and the legendary tradition deals with the connection between Buseol and Myohwa and the love and lust of Myohwa in an interesting way. Buseoljeon is meaningful in that it adopted the writing style of romantic novels popular in the 16th century instead of following the tradition of Buddhist novels like Ado and Wonkwang. However, it as a
limitation as a romantic novel in that it failed to have complete fictitiousness because it took historical figures as its main characters.

이 논문은 暎虛大師의 시문집인 『暎虛集』卷3에 실려 전하는 <浮雪傳>의 전기소설적 성격과 소설사적 의미에 대해 살핀 글이다. <부설전>의 전기적 성격과 부설 관련 이야기의 전승에서 드러난 장르적 연변 양상에 대해 살핀 뒤, <부설전>이 갖는 전기소설사적 의미에 대해 진단했다. 전기소설의 서사문법에서 중요한 것은 기이한 것을 추구하는 전기성과 문식을 드러내는 삽입시가 얼마만큼 서사와 잘 연결되어 문예미학을 창출해 내는가의 여부이다. 따라서 본고는 <부설전>의 전기소설적 특성을 규명해 내기 위해 작품을 분석하는 한편, 이야기와 삽입시 사이에 드러난 유기적 관계에 주목하고자 했다. <부설전>에 등장하는 ‘生熟’ 시험은 이 작품이 전기소설로 인정받을 수 있는 핵심적인 요소이지만 일반적인 전기소설에 드러나는 전기성과 일정한 거리가 있음을 지적하면서 전기소설 작품으로서의 한계를
노정시켰다고 보았다. 전기소설인 <부설전>과 설화 작품을 비교해 살핀결과, <부설전>은 부설이란 인물의 기이한 행적을 삽입시를 통해 드러내는 데 의미를 두었고, 설화적 전승에서는 부설과 묘화의 결연 그리고 묘화의 애욕을 흥미롭게 드러내는 데 중점을 두고 있다는 사실을 알 수 있었다.
<부설전>을 기존의 성도담과 승전의 서사적 전통을 이어받으면서 전기소설의 서사양식을 발전적으로 흡수해 16세기에 유행한 전기소설의 글쓰기 방식의 자장 안으로 들어온 작품이라고 평가했다. 역사적 인물을 주인공으로 등장시켰던 <최치원>이 지닌 소설적 한계가 『금오신화』와 『기재기이』에 이르러서야 비로소 극복된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 <부설전>은 역사적 인물을 소설 세계로 다시 끌어들임으로써 전기적 인물을 허구적으로 형상화시키지 못했다는 점에서 그 한계를 노정시키기도 했다.
