Opacity is left unresolved in classic OT that does not allow serial or intermediate derivation. A surface true form fares worse in opacity. Sympathy Theory is proposed to patch up this problem. However, as evidenced in Modern Hebrew, Sympathy is a back-door introduction of derivation. Though Sympathy seems to remedy the shortcomings of classic OT in opacity, it cannot distinguish the traditional notion of counterbleeding from bleeding.
Sympathy blindly creates the same result in both transparency and opacity. Optimality Theory with Candidate Chains (OT-CC) and Precedence Constraint (Prec) (McCarthy 2006) do away with the failure of Sympathy observed in Modern Hebrew. OT-CC keeps the violation record of
faithfulness constraints and Prec evaluates their violation order in chains. OT-CC with Prec is proven to have explanatory adequacy and superiority.
