This study is performed to grope for the popularization of Ganwha Seon(看話禪), which is one of the methods of traditional ascetic in Korean Buddhism. I am focusing on 2 problems, which
are 'what is the problem that disturb the popularization of Ganwha Seon?' and 'what are the tasks which should be forwarded by the Jogey Order(曹溪宗) to popularize Ganwha
Seon?'. Based on a critical mind, this study, in the mass, was constructed by 3 parts, which are firstly, the problem of recognition, secondly, the problem of ascetic convention to be
overcome to popularize Ganwha Seon, and thirdly, tasks by the aspect of the Jogye Order for the popularization of Ganwha Seon.
At first, this study indicated three points about the problem of recognition to be overcome for the popularization of Ganwha Seon.
The points are ① Dualistic recognition about recluses and a married Buddhists, and the recluse-centered ascetic culture based on that recognition, ② Buddhists' thoughts like 'Acetic is very
difficult' , their attitude to stay at unstable beliefs, ③ Exclusion of ascetic seminary which is only permitted for recluses, and the absence of the programme for general people. Second, about ascetic convention, this study pointed out 'unkind ascetic convention', and Ganwha(看話)-centered strict aspect of ascetic. It is well known that Ganwha Seon, have the strictest
ascetic convention, therefore to overcome its strictness, it was suggested to have delicate attention to the ascetic basic of beginners and open mind for other ascetic methods beyond
Ganwha Seon Also, it was indicated to establish the mutual supplemental relation between the result from study and practical ascetic for the ascetic of Zen.
Thirdly, there are 4 points to indicate what are the tasks which should be forwarded by the Jogye Order. ① It is necessary to build ascetic hall only for married Buddhists since general people
can join ascetic, and to prepare organized ascetic programmes. ② Ascetic method should be unified, as the Jogye Order develop the standard of ascetic programmes. ③ The standard instruction for ascetic should be published for those who are interested in ascetic, even they are beginners ④ It was suggested to train ascetic directors who could properly teach the public with collecting the public's desire of ascetic.

본고는 한국불교의 전통적 수행법인 간화선(看話禪)의 대중화를 모색하기 위해 작성되었으며, 다음과 같은 두 가지 문제점에 초점을 두었다. 즉, ‘간화선의 대중화를 저해하는 문제점은 무엇인가?’와 ‘간화선을 대중화하기 위해서 종단적 차원에서 추진해야 할 과제가 무엇인가?’가 그것이다. 이 같은 문제의식에 기초하여 본고는 크게 세 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 첫째 간화선 수행의 대중화를 위해 극복해야 할 인식의 문제, 둘째 간화선 수행의 대중화를 위해 극복해야 할 수행풍토의 문제, 셋째 간화선 수행의
대중화를 위한 종단적 과제가 그것이다.
첫째, 수행의 대중화를 위해 극복해야 할 인식의 문제에 대해서는 본고는 모두 세 가지 문제를 지적하였다. ① 출가자와 재가자에 대한 이원적 사유와 이를 바탕으로 한 출가자 중심의 수행문화, ② 불자들 스스로가 수행을 어렵게 생각하고 스스로 기복적 신행에 안주하려는 태도, ③ 출가자들에게만 허용되는 수행도량의 폐쇄성과 일반인들을 위한 수행 도량과 프로그램의 부재를 꼽았다.둘째, 간화선 대중화를 위해 극복해야 할 수행풍토에 대해서는 ‘친절하지 못한 수행풍토’와 ‘간화 중심의 경직된 수행관’을 지적
하였다. 간화선이 제일이라는 경직된 수행풍토를 극복하기 위해서 취해야 할 조치로는 초심자들을 위해 수행 기초에 대한 자상한 배려와 간화선 이외의 수행법에 대한 개방적 태도가 필요함을 제기했다. 그리고 선 수행에 대한 학문적 연구 성과와 실제수행이 상호보완적 관계로 정립되어야 함을 지적했다.
셋째, 수행의 대중화를 위한 종단적 과제에 대해서는 다음과 같은 네 가지 문제를 지적하였다. ① 일반인들이 자유롭게 참가할 수 있는 재가불자(在家佛子) 전용 수행관을 건립하고 체계적인 수행 프로그램을 마련할 것, ② 종단적 차원에서 표준화된 수행프로그램을 개발하여 수행법의 통일성을 기할 것, ③ 비록 초심자라 할지라도 수행에 관심이 있다면 누구나 지침으로 삼을 수 있는 표준적 수행 지침서의 발간, ④ 수행에 대한 대중들의 욕구를 수렴하여 이들을 올바로 지도할 수 있는 수행지도자의 체계
적인 양성을 제안하였다.
