This study aims to investigate the anthropological and educational significance of Cassirer's philosophy of human culture. In mythical thought man thinks of time and space as living and holy one. This mythical thought which gives the aesthetic feeling of nature and the reverence for life throws some light on the problem-solving approach of environmental crisis. Mythical thought, however, is lacking in individuality and reflective thinking. Futhermore it can be willfully manipulated in the excuse of social or political interests. On the other hand, art enables us to discover the form and reality of the world, and it can be the meaningful mediator of self-knowledge. The process of self-knowledge through artistic activity is equal to a significant moral work.

본 연구의 목적은 캇시러의 문화철학에 나타난 신화 및 예술의 인간학적 함의와 도덕교육에의 시사점을 밝히는 것이다. 신화적 사고에서 시간과 공간에는 생명의 느낌과 성스러운 감정이 배어있다. 신화적 사고에 의한 생명의 연대성의 감정은 자연에 대한 미적 감수성과 생명에 대한 외경심을 고양한다. 하지만 신화적 사고는 개인의 자유와 비판적 사고가 결여되어 있으며, 사회적 혹은 정치적 이익에 의해 오용될 수 있다는 한계를 노정하고 있다. 한편 예술은 신화와 달리 개인의 개성과 자유, 반성적 태도가 특징적이다. 예술은 현실과 자연의 발견을 가능케 하고, 자기인식의 중요한 매개이다. 더 나아가 예술활동을 통한 자기인식의 과정은 윤리적인 작업이기도 하다.
