The empiricism of Mohist thought is worthy to be noticed as a thought in East Asian tradition,
which is expected to match Western ways of thinking and modern life. Since quests for Mohist thought were started in modern times, it has been generally agreed upon that Mohist ethics was a utilitarianism.
But there is as yet no full-length expository treatment of Mohist utilitarianism as a teleological ethical system. Although a utilitarian ethical system presupposes ‘intrinsic value’, any quest of a Mohist utilitarian system did not present its intrinsic value, nor did it attempt to discuss the problem of intrinsic value in a Mohist utilitarian system.
This essay’s purpose is to call upon Mohist ethical thought to re-explore in a sufficiently broad and deep context. All studies must begin with the distinctive characteristics of Mohist ethics. The author establishes four principal characteristics of Mohist ethical thought. These must be a foundation for exploring the Mohist ethics. In dealing with these characteristics, some significant problems for the future study will be raised.

이 논문은 묵가의 윤리사상을 공리주의로 규명한 기존의 연구가 안고 있는 결함 또는 보완해
야 할 사항을 지적하고, 앞으로 연구자들이 해결해 주어야 할 과제를 제시한 것이다. 하나의 공
리주의 체계는 ‘본래적 가치’의 설정을 대전제(大前提)로 하므로, 묵가의 윤리학설을 서양의 공리
주의로 해명해 낼 때 ‘최대 다수의 최대 행복’ 원리에 맞추어 내는 것만으로는 부족하고 반드시 묵가 공리주의 윤리체계에서는 무엇이 본래적 가치인지가 제시되어야 한다. 기존의 연구에서는 본래적 가치에 대한 언급조차 찾아보기 어렵다. 묵가의 윤리학에 대한 앞으로의 연구가 기존의 대부분의 연구처럼 서양의 공리주의로 해명하는 방향으로 계속 나가든, 아니면 다른 방향을 모색하든 간에, 모든 연구는 묵가의 윤리학설이 갖는 고유한 특성으로부터 시작되어야 할 것이다. 이 글에서는 그것을 네 가지로 정리한다. 이상과 같은 검토와 정리의 과정에서 자연스럽게 앞으로 탐구되고 해결되어야 할 과제들이 제시된다.
