Clinical social work theories developed in the western culture have been used for many years
in Korean social work field without any serious verification for its fitness. This paper investigates
some aspects of the cultural differences between the western and the eastern world. In addition,
theories of language and narrative are proposed as an alternative to the current social work
practice theories. Since language and narrative reflect one’s culture and history, social workers in
any culture are able to use their own language and narrative to construct the desirable reality for
their clients.

현재 우리의 사회복지의 실천은 한국적 상황에서 자생된 이론이 없으며 서구에서 도입된 다양
한 이론들이 소개되어 사용되고 있다. 서구의 이론들은 문화적인 차이를 반영하고 있음에도 불구
하고 이에 대한 반성과 검토가 미비했던 것이 사실이다.
본 논문은 서구의 사회복지 실천이론이 가진 한계를 우리 문화와 서구 문화의 차이를 통해 찾
아보면서 이를 극복할 수 있는 실천 이론을 모색해보았다. 지금까지 사용해온 이론들에 대한 대
안으로 언어와 이야기 접근법을 적극적으로 사회복지 실천에 활용할 것을 제안하였다.
