The social welfare service provided to the family of adult mental retardations staying at homes has been provided neither fully, nor actively in the side of the family, nor surely being of their needs. So their service has only been done to the mental retardations without their family situation.
That is because the social welfare service system is the initial stage of introducing to fundamentally reduce the family care giving-burden of adult mental retardations staying at homes as well as it was not discussed how to go and practice the service for their family.
Therefore, the social welfare service should be provided not only systematically but also professionally.
That might enforce the mental retardations wellbeing as well as the function of family care at last. Through this enforcement, the quality of life of both the adult mental retardations and their family will be enhanced.
In this sense, the family of adult mental retardations is considered as the consumer who has the purchasing power and the right or the sovereign.
This paper is aimed not only to formalize social resources which would be there at the micro, meso, or macro environmental level - and which the family possibly utilizes - but also to suggest the approach to what service social work practice provides the family.

현재 재가 성인 정신지체인의 가족에게 제공되고 있는 사회복지 서비스는 가족의 부양부담과 서비스
욕구를 제대로 파악하지 못한 상황에서 가족을 제외시킨 정신지체인 중심의 서비스만을 소극적․단편
적으로 제공해오고 있다.
이러한 이유는 가족을 대상으로 어떻게 서비스를 전개해 나가야 할지에 관한 방법들이 논의되지 못하
고 있으며, 근본적으로 가족의 부양부담을 경감시킬 수 있는 사회복지 서비스 체계가 도입 초기 단계에
있는 실정이기 때문이다.
따라서 앞으로 보다 체계적이고 조직적인 측면에서 가족을 위한 사회복지서비스가 제공되어야 한다.
이는 궁극적으로 정신지체인의 복지뿐만 아니라 이들을 부양하는 가족의 부양 기능을 강화시키고 이를
통해 성인정신지체인은 물론, 가족 모두의 삶의 질을 향상시킬 수 있는 중요한 방법이 될 것이다. 이러한 의미에서, 앞으로 정신지체인을 부양하는 가족은 사회복지 서비스의 주권을 가진 소비자로서의 개념으로 받아들여져야 할 것이다.
이러한 관점에서, 본 고는 성인 정신지체인 가족이 활용할 수 있는 미시적, 중간적, 거시적 환경수준에
서 존재하는 각각의 사회적 자원들을 유형화 하였고, 이를 통해 사회사업 실천이 가족에게 어떠한 서비
스를 제공해야 하는지에 관한 접근 방안을 고찰하였다.
