This study investigates the effects of life stress and social support from parents and friends on suicidal ideation among korean adolescents. Based on the existence of behavioral expression and self-injury, suicidal behavior is classified as suicidal ideation, suicidal plans and suicidal attempts.
Life stress includes major and minor life events and reflects the recency of the events and the
evaluation by respondents.
Subjects for the survey were male and female students who were attending high school in
April 2004. Data from 521 adolescents was analyzed through descriptive statistics and linear
regression, using the SPSS 11.5. As a result, several findings were made. Life stress, especially
stress in friend/peer sub-dimension, increases suicidal ideation. Also, social support from parents and friends, especially evaluational support, decrease the suicidal ideation that was caused by life stress. This study identifies the cause of adolescent suicidal ideation and the effect of social support from parents and friends while providing a focus for the prevention counselling and treatment programs.

본 연구는 우리나라 청소년들의 자살생각에 대한 생활스트레스의 영향과 그에 대한 부모와 친
구에 의한 사회적 지원의 완충효과를 알아보기 위하여 수행되었다. 자살행동은 행동적 표현과 자
해여부를 기준으로 하여 자살생각, 계획 및 시도 등으로 구분하였고, 생활스트레스에는 주요한 생
활사건과 사소한 생활사건 모두를 포함하면서 생활사건의 시간성과 사건에 대한 응답자에 의한
평가를 반영하였다.
조사는 2004년 4월 중에 고등학교에 재학 중인 남녀 학생들을 대상으로 실시하였고, 결과 분
석에는 521명의 자료가 사용되었으며 SPSS 11.5를 이용하여 기술통계분석과 선형회귀분석 등을
실시하였다.
연구결과, 생활스트레스 특히 친구/동료 영역의 스트레스가 자살생각을 증가시키는 것으로 나
타났다. 그리고 부모와 친구에 의한 사회적 지원은 모두 생활스트레스에 의한 자살생각을 감소시
키는데 특히 평가적 지원의 효과가 두드러진 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 청소년 자살문제에
대한 상담에 있어 더욱 관심을 가져야 할 사항을 밝혀주는 것이라고 하겠다.
