Since 1980s Germany has seen a considerable increase in the participation of women in politics. This phenomenon has been due to various factors: the entry of feminists into political institutions, the formation of the Green party, a change of political culture, a rise in the level of academic achievement by women.Currently, participation by women in german politics is 32.2% in the federal congress, 31.4% in the state congress and 26.1% in the local congress. These rates are among the highest in the world. Despite such increased participation, female politicians frequently encounter many difficulties in a political world that is often male-centric in structure and male-dominated in culture. Furthermore, the full integration of women into german politics is but a facade. In reality, they are outsiders within the political world. However, as 'outsiders within,' they are able to point out and make aware to others the various problems inherent in a male-dominated political culture and structure.Thus, They have the opportunity to improve the status of women in the political world by introducing changes to the culture, its processes and its institutional structures. It is in recognizing and using these opportunities to their advantage that women are able to contribute to the improvement of democracy in Germany.
