The importance of the work of Thomas and Znaniecki for contemporary sociology is shown by the research done on The Polish Peasant in Europe and America in the last years. This study proposes a new evaluation of the correspondence of the Polish Peasant. The evaluation employs first of all a perspective of the sociology of knowledge (K. Mannheim) and a phenomenology of the “life-world(Lebenswelt)” (A. Schutz and T. Luckmann) of two generations. We applies the analytical categories derived from the re-evaluation of The Polish Peasant to the Korea’s case, especially to the periods of modernization (1890-1930). In the case of Korea, the emigration means not moving from own country into another (‘geographical emigration’), but moving from traditional epoche into modern (‘timely emigration’). Just like the case of The Polish Peasant, we could find out in the case of Korea that through emigration from traditional Korea into modern era very different historical-social dispositions of two generations condense into an abrupt biographical change within a short time-span. The decisive difference in the life-worlds of the two generations is the transition from community to society, from Gemeinschaft to Gesellschaft, in the sense of F. Tönnies.

현대 사회학에서 Thomas and Znaniecki의 연구 󰡔The Polish Peasant in Europe and America󰡕는 매우 중요한 기여를 하였다. 이 연구는 이들 폴란드 농민들의 서신교환에 대한 새로운 평가를 수행한다. 만하임의 지식사회학과 슈츠(와 루크만)의 생활세계의 현상학적으로 재구성된 세대 이론을 통해 폴란드에 남겨진 부모 세대와 미국으로 이주한 자녀 세대들의 세대 갈등을 새롭게 분석할 수 있다. 이렇게 새롭게 구성된 세대 개념을 근대화 시기(1890-1930)의 한국에 적용할 수 있다. 양국의 ‘신세대’들은 모두 근대로의 이주를 경험한다. 물론 폴란드 신세대들은 ‘공간적 이주’(geographical emigration)의 성격이 강한데 반해서 한국의 동료들은 새로운 시대로의 ‘시간적 이주’(timely emigration)를 경험한다. 양국 모두에서 부모 세대와 자녀 세대들은 고유한 생활세계를 가지게 된다. 그리고 양 생활세계의 차이는 퇴니스의 의미에서 공동체(Gemeinschaft)와 사회(Gesellschaft)의 차이에 상응한다고 할 수 있다. 신세대의 근대로의 이주는 기성세대로부터 분리, 고립된 근대적 생활세계로의 이주라고 할 수 있다.
