This study is based on the premise that a film director can deliver his/her message to audience more strongly and effectively by color plan he adopts.
The role of colors as a carrier of the meaning was examined by analyzing and reinterpreting the relations between the colors displayed on the screen and the emotions of the major characters in the film, "Untold Scandal" directed by Jaeyong Yi. The film was released in 2003, and it is considered as the first Korean costume drama whose background of "Untold Scandal" is 18th century Korea.
Unlike colors in the printed media, colors in the movie are used to symbolize the director's idea. The colors in the movie symbolize the traditional meaning shown in "Korean Five Cardinal Colors" as well as the meaning of the colors perceived by Western culture.
This study tried to analyze the power and implications of colors and their psychological effects on human being. Consequently, this study shows both Western symbolism and the Korean symbolism of colors are present in the movie.
