This study examined potential problems of sportscasters’ dramatic description and embellishment of violent actions on ‘no-holds-barred’ programs. Six ‘no-holds-barred’ programs televised via a cable channel were selected for this study. The unit of analysis for the content analysis was a single sentence of commentary spoken by each sportscaster on the six programs. The results showed that fifty percent of the total 571 sentences were evaluated as the descriptive sentences that recounted players’ actions and clarified facts of the game. About thirty-three percent were classified as the dramatic sentences that created the impression of conflict and intensified a struggle. The results also revealed that commentators utilized dramatic sentences more frequently than did announcers. According to the re-classification of the dramatic sentences, 51% were neutral dramatic sentences, 37% sere complimentary ones, and 12% were derogatory ones. Implications for further research are discussed.

본 연구는 스포츠캐스터의 언어적 편향성이 장기적인 관점에서 시청자의 의식에 부정적 영향을 끼칠 수 있다는 문제제기로부터 시작하였으며, 이종격투기 중계프로그램에서 아나운서와 해설가의 표현에 나타난 문제점을 내용분석을 통해 알아보고자하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구를 위해 케이블채널들을 통해 획득된 이종격투기 프로그램들 중 사전조사를 통해 폭력성 또는 경기내용이 유사한6편을 선정하여 분석을 실시하였다. 분석단위는 스포츠캐스터(아나운서와 해설가)의 개별문장이었으며, 녹취를 통해 총 571개의 문장을 분석유목에 따라 분석하였다. 분석결과, 문장유형에 있어서 스포츠캐스터의 표현 중 약 50% 정도가 경기내용을 사실 그대로 묘사하는 기술적 문장이었다. 드라마적 표현은 약 33% 정도 나타났으며, 아나운서에 비해 해설가의 드라마적 표현이 빈도수면에서 많은 것으로 나타났다. 드라마적 표현을 재분류하여 분석한 결과, 해설가는 중립적인 드라마 표현을 많이 하는 반면, 아나운서는 찬사적 드라마 표현이 상대적으로 많은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 찬사적 표현은 폭력의 미화로 연결될 수 있다는 측면에서 주의를 요하고 있다. 아울러, 후속 연구를 위한 제언 및 함축적 의미가 논의되었다.
