The purpose of this study is to analyze the major achievements of Park Hak-rae(朴鶴來) by dividing his life into periods and to reexamine the modern significance of “Hakchojeon(鶴樵傳)”. Focusing on “Hakchojeon,” this study examines Park Hak rae’s life by dividing it into the period of growth before joining Donghak, the period of transformation of his religious activities after joining Donghak, and the period of settlement after the Battle of Seojeongja. Based on this, the modern significance of “Hakchojeon” was analyzed from various perspectives: historical, Korean literature, archival, pedagogical, and management. The “growth period” in Park Hak-rae’s life was identified as a process in which practical ethics and judgment skills, formed in everyday life, were accumulated. During the “transformative period,” Park Hak-rae actively demonstrated pragmatic leadership by maintaining order within the Donghak organization, engaging in public relief activities, suppressing private violence, and engaging in negotiations. During the “settlement period,” it was revealed that his leadership competence did not disappear with the failure of the revolution, but rather continued in a transformed form. This study confirmed a new image of Park Hak-rae as a Donghak leader, centered on the continuity of his life history and practical ethics. The contemporary significance of “Hakchojeon” has been analyzed from five academic perspectives. First, from a historical perspective, it is evaluated as a valuable historical document that records the lives of the people and the experiences of the Donghak Peasant Revolution from an insider’s perspective. Second, from a Korean literature perspective, it demonstrates the potential for expanding the narratives of the people during the transition to modernity as an autobiographical narrative centered on daily life and practical life. Third, from an archival perspective, it illuminates the significance of the act of recording, where individual experiences are transformed into public memory. Fourth, from a pedagogical perspective, it holds educational value that can be utilized as a text for experiential learning, character and citizenship education, and lifelong learning. Fifth, from a management perspective, it presents an exemplary case of pragmatic leadership. However, this study relies primarily on the personal record “Hakchojeon,” and thus cannot completely rule out the possibility of narrative subjectivity and selectivity of memory. Future research could explore expanded discussion and implications from the perspective of the Donghak Peasant Revolution by comparing and analyzing “Hakchojeon” with similar records from Donghak leaders.

이 연구의 목적은 박학래(朴鶴來)의 생애를 시기별로 구분하여 주요 행적을 분석하고, 『학초전(鶴樵傳)』의 현대적 의미를 재조명하는 것이 다. 이 연구에서는 『학초전』을 중심으로 박학래의 생애를 시기별로 동 학 입도 이전의 성장기, 동학 입도 이후 접주 활동의 변혁기, 그리고 서정자(西亭子) 전투 이후 정착기로 구분하여 고찰하였다. 이를 토대로 『학초전』의 현대적 의미를 역사학적·국문학적·기록학적·교육학적·경 영학적 관점에서 다각적으로 분석하였다. 박학래 생애에서 ‘성장기’는 일상적 생활 세계에서 형성된 실천 윤리 와 판단 능력이 축적되는 과정으로 규명되었다. ‘변혁기’에서 박학래는 동학 조직 내부의 질서 유지, 민중 구제 활동, 사적 폭력 억제와 협상 을 병행하는 실천을 통해 실용적 리더십을 적극적으로 발휘하였다. ‘정 착기’에는 그의 리더십 역량이 혁명 실패와 함께 소멸하지 않고, 형태 를 변형하여 지속되었음이 드러났다. 이 연구에서는 생애사적 연속성 과 실천 윤리를 중심으로 한 박학래의 새로운 동학 지도자상(像)이 확 인되었다. 『학초전』의 현대적 의미는 다섯 가지 학문적 관점에서 분석되었다. 첫째, ‘역사학’적 관점에서는 민중 주체의 생활사와 동학농민혁명 경험 을 내부자의 시선으로 기록한 귀중한 사료로 평가된다. 둘째, ‘국문학’ 적 관점에서는 ‘일상과 실천 생활’ 중심의 자서전적 서사로서, 근대 전 환기 민중 서사의 확장 가능성을 보여준다. 셋째, ‘기록학’적 관점에서 는 개인의 경험이 공적 기억으로 전환되는 기록 행위의 의미를 조명한 다. 넷째, ‘교육학’적 관점에서는 경험학습, 인성과 시민성 교육, 평생 학습 등과 같은 텍스트로 활용이 가능한 교육적 가치를 지닌다. 다섯 째, ‘경영학’적 관점에서는 실용적 리더십을 발휘하여 조직과 공동체의 지속 가능성을 도모한 모범 사례를 제시한다. 그러나 이 연구는 『학초전』이라는 개인 기록에 주로 의존하고 있어, 서술의 주관성과 기억의 선택성이 개입될 가능성을 완전히 배제할 수 는 없다. 향후 연구에서는 『학초전』과 비슷한 동학 지도자의 기록과 비 교·분석을 통해 동학농민혁명 관점에서 확장된 논의와 의미를 탐색할 수 있을 것이다.
