This study analyzes the narratives of lower-class characters in the drama Mr. Sunshine to examine how the Donghak spirit is integrated into modern Korean history. It first traces the process by which the “Innaecheon(人乃天, Humans are Heaven)” ideology of the 1894 Donghak Peasant Revolution was inherited by the Jeongmi Righteous Army of 1907 as a concrete anti-Japanese struggle. The study confirms that the historical reality-where popular resistance transformed into a people-centered armed struggle as the lower classes shed their social shackles to become modern subjects-resonates deeply with the drama’s narrative. Specifically, the research focuses on the fusion of the traditional Confucian scholar spirit, symbolized by Go Sahong( 高士弘), with the popular leadership represented by Jang Seung-gu(張勝具) and Hwang Eun-san(黃殷山). This merger shows how abstract ideological causes were sublimated into a powerful engine for independence through the survival instincts of the common people. Furthermore, the analysis explores how “Decadent Romanticism”, which wallows in the futility of a perishing era, transforms into “Tragic Sublimity” when it encounters the great cause of national independence. While the decadent atmosphere of the late Joseon period instilled nihilism in the characters, it paradoxically led them to achieve a “tragic affirmation” in the Nietzsche’s sense. The image of the Righteous Army marching toward certain death while calling one another “comrades” mirrors the Dionysian frenzy that supports Nietzsche’s Amor Fati(the love of fate). Additionally, the study confirms that the decadent romanticism shown by characters Kim Hee-sung(金熙星) and Gu Dongmae( 具東魅) was an aesthetic struggle to extract the most noble values from a collapsing nation, transcending Baudelaire’s ennui. Ultimately, Mr. Sunshine illustrates how individuals with their own deficiencies break down and are reborn in the face of Joseon’s destiny. Through these aesthetic achievements, the transition from personal “Love” to national “Independence” prompts a contemporary reflection on the meaning of a nation and the invaluable worth of the common people who constitute it. In conclusion, by restoring the lives of the “nameless Righteous Army” neglected by historical records, Mr. Sunshine completes a brilliant narrative of resistance born in the darkest of times. Beyond a mere period piece, it holds significant value in rediscovering the popular heroism that serves as the root of modern society.

본 연구는 드라마 <미스터 션샤인>에 나타난 하층민 캐릭터들의 서사 분석을 통해 한국 근대사 속에서 ‘동학(東學)’ 정신이 어떻게 녹아들 었는지를 고찰했다. 먼저, 1894년 동학농민혁명의 ‘인내천(人乃天)’ 사 상이 1907년 정미의병이라는 구체적인 항일 투쟁으로 계승되는 과정 을 추적하였다. 드라마 속 하층민들이 신분 질서의 굴레를 벗어나 근대적 주체로 거듭나는 과정에서 저항이 민중 중심의 무장 투쟁으로 변 모한 역사적 실체와 드라마적 서사가 조응하고 있음을 확인하였다. 특히, 드라마 속 ‘고사홍(高士弘)’으로 상징되는 유림의 선비 정신이 ‘장승구(張勝具)와 황은산(黃殷山)’으로 대변되는 민중적 리더십과 결합 하는 과정에 천착했다. 이로써 관념적 명분이 민초들의 생존 본능과 결합하면서 강력한 독립 투쟁의 동력으로 승화되었음을 확인했다. 또한, 멸망해가는 시대의 허무를 탐미하는 ‘데카당스적 낭만주의’가 조국 독립이라는 대의와 만나 ‘비극적 숭고미’로 변모하는 양상을 아울러 분석했다. 구한말이라는 퇴폐적 시대상(Decadence)이 드라마 속 인물들 에게 허무주의를 심어주었다. 하지만 역설적으로 비극적 탐미주의로 승화시켜 니체의 ‘비극적 긍정’이라는 의미를 깨닫게 했다. 패배를 예 감하면서도 ‘동지’라 부르며 사지로 나가는 정미의병들의 모습은 니체 의 ‘운명애(Amor fati )’를 떠받치는 디오니소스적 열광과 닮아있었다. 또한, 드라마 속 인물 중 ‘김희성(金熙星)과 구동매(具東魅)’가 보여준 데카당스적 낭만주의는 보들레르적 권태를 넘어 멸망해가는 조선에서 가장 고결한 가치를 추출하려는 미학적 투쟁이었음도 확인했다. 따라 서 <미스터 션샤인>은 제각각의 결핍을 가진 인물을 통해 ‘조선’이라는 운명 앞에서 어떻게 무너지고, 또 어떻게 다시 거듭나는지를 보여주었 다. 이렇듯 드라마가 성취한 미학적 성과를 통해 인물들의 개인적 ‘러 브(Love)’가 국가의 ‘독립(Independence)’으로 확장되는 서사에서 오늘 날 국가란 무엇이며 이러한 나라를 구성하는 민초들의 가치가 얼마나 소중한지를 다시금 묻게 만드는 계기를 마련하였다. 결론적으로 <미스터 션샤인>은 역사적 기록에서 소외되었던 ‘이름 없는 의병’들의 삶을 복원해냄으로써, 가장 어두운 시대에 피어난 찬란 한 저항의 서사를 완성하였다. 이는 단순한 시대극의 재현을 넘어, 오늘날 우리 사회의 뿌리가 되는 민중적 영웅주의의 가치를 재발견하는 데 중요한 의의를 지닌다.
