As an alternative to the lack of scientific evidence in art therapy, neuroarts field, grounded in recent neuroscientific understanding, has gained attention. However, as the academic concept remains unestablished, the academic legitimacy of the practical education system for expert training is inadequate. Experimental aesthetics and neuroarts, based on neurophysiological understanding, emerged as a new domain in late 19th-century Vienna, Austria, born from the socio-cultural context and epistemological framework of the time. Therefore the scientific discourse of Viennese Modernism can be seen as the starting point for establishing the academic concept of neuroarts today. At that time, the body was a crucial element for understanding the mental, to overcome the limitations of naturalism, and art was a powerful enlightening tool for expanding knowledge. Both self-purpose and utility, essential elements of scholarship, are core criteria for establishing the concept of neuroarts as an academic discipline at epistemological, ontological, and ethical levels. Neuroarts is an autonomous intellectual activity which interprets human essence based upon an understanding of the neural experience of art. Concurrently from a practical perspective, there exists the potential for it to be reduced to a mere scientific tool or therapeutic package.

예술치료의 과학적 근거 부족에 대한 대안으로 최근 신경과학적 이해를 기반으로 하는 신경 예술 분야가 주목받고 있다. 하지만 아직 학문적 개념이 정립되지 않아 전문가 양성을 위한 실 제적인 교육체계의 학문적 정당성이 미흡한 실정이다. 예술 경험에 대한 신경생리적 이해를 기 반으로 하는 실험미학과 신경예술은 19세기 말 오스트리아 빈의 사회문화적 상황과 지식체계 에서 탄생한 신생 분야였다. 따라서 빈 모더니즘을 관통한 과학담론은 현재 신경예술의 학문적 개념 정립을 위한 출발점이라고 볼 수 있다. 당시 자연주의적 한계를 극복하기 위해 신체는 정 신을 이해하는 중요한 요소였으며 예술은 과학적 지식의 확장을 위한 강력한 계몽적 도구였다. 학문으로서 필수 요소인 자기목적성과 유용성은 인식적, 존재적 그리고 가치적 차원에서 신경 예술의 개념을 정립하는 핵심적인 기준이 된다. 신경예술은 예술의 신경적 경험에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 인간의 본질을 해석하는 자유로운 지식 활동이다. 동시에 실용적 측면에서 자칫 과학 적 도구나 치료 패키지로 전락할 가능성 역시 존재한다.
