In this study, I examined the patterns of usage and functions of maeoki (prefatory) expressions in Japanese and Korean debates. The content and delivery of speech are pivotal in debates that presuppose opposing opinions. Focusing on these characteristics, I analyzed maeoki expressions that appear before or during the main speech to support interpersonal consideration and communicative efficiency. The data included three Japanese and three Korean debates conducted under identical conditions by native-speaking university students. I extracted and analyzed maeoki expressions associated with frequency and function in the discourse. Based on interpersonal consideration and communicative efficiency, the expressions were classified into eight categories. The results demonstrate that maeoki expressions occurred approximately 3.75 times more frequently in Japanese data than in Korean data. Expressions related to communicative efficiency were predominant in both the languages. In Japanese debates, there were instances in which a single expression fulfilled multiple functions. The differences in functional usage patterns between the two languages suggest language-specific strategies in using maeoki expressions in debate discourses. Under identical analytical conditions, this comparative study facilitates the understanding of discourse strategies in Japanese and Korean debates.

본 연구는 한･일 양언어의 디베이트 담화에서 사용되는 전치(前置き)표현의 사용 양상과 담화 기능을 비교･분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 디베이트는 의견 대립을 전제로 하는 상호작용적 담화로, 발화 내용뿐 아니라 발화의 전달 방식 또한 중요하다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 발화의 중심 내용의 앞이나 도중에 사용되어, 상대방과의 원만한 관계를 유지하거나 의사소통의 효율성을 높이는 전치표현에 주목하였다. 분석 자료는 일본어 및 한국어 모어 화자인 대학생이 참여한 디베이트 각 3건으로, 동일한 절차와 구조를 갖춘 자료를 대상으로 하였다. 각 자료에서 전치표현을 추출하여 사용 건수와 담화 기능을 분석하였으며, 기능은 상대방에 대한 배려와 의사소통의 효율 성이라는 관점에서 여덟 가지로 분류하였다. 그 결과, 전치표현의 총 사용 건수는 일본어 모어 장면에서 3.75배 많게 나타났다. 또한 양 언어 모두 의사소통의 효율성을 높이는 전치표현이 우세하게 나타났으며, 일본 어에서는 하나의 전치표현이 복수의 담화 기능을 수행하는 사례도 관찰되었다. 기능별 사용 양상에 있어 한･일 간 차이가 존재함이 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 디베이트라는 대립적 상호작용 환경에서 전치표현이 상대방에 대한 배려와 효율적인 의사소통을 위해 언어별로 상이한 전략으로 운용되고 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 디베이트 장면을 대상 으로 한･일 전치표현을 동일 조건에서 비교･분석했다는 점에서 의의를 가지며, 향후 디베 이트 담화 분석 및 교육에 기초적 시사점을 제공한다.
