Many ‘two-character kanji + 者’ combinations do not have furigana. In such cases, it is possible to read the first ‘two-character kanji’ by identifying the kanji word of the same root entry. However, it is often indecipherable to read the latter ‘者’ because it does not follow the furigana system used in the Eiwajii. This prevents the entire kanji word that contains ‘者’ from being read. In the current study, I inferred the reading of ‘two-character kanji+者’ that account for the majority of kanji words containing ‘者’. This helped to elucidate a correlation between kanji words and furigana for ‘two-character kanji+者’. The results helped to facilitate reading and provided an estimate of the words with partial furigana or no furigana at all. By establishing the correlation between kanji and furigana in this paper, it was possible to read all the kanji words containing ‘者’ . Through these results, I established a foundation to interpret all kanji with its associated furigana in these translated words.

본고에서는 『英和字彙』에 실려있는 「二字漢字＋者」를 대상으로 振り仮名가 병기되어 있는 漢字表記와 振り仮名의 대응관계를 분석한 후, 振り仮名가 일부분밖에 병기되어 있 지 않거나 전혀 없는 漢字表記의 語形(讀音)을 추정했다. 「二字漢字＋者」에 振り仮名가 병기되지 않은 경우, 앞부분의 「二字漢字」는 語根이 같은 표제어의 동일 漢字表記를 참조하면 語形을 알 수 있다. 하지만, 뒷부분의 「者」는 『英和字彙』에서 振り仮名를 병기하 는 원칙에 따르지 않아 그 語形을 알 수 없는 것이 많다. 이러한 점은 「者」를 포함한 漢字表記 전체의 문제점이기도 하다. 「者」의 語形을 모르기 때문에 「者」를 포함한 漢字 表記 전체의 語形을 알 수 없는 것이다. 이러한 이유로, 본고에서는 우선 「者」를 포함한 漢字表記의 대부분을 차지하고 있는 「二字漢字＋者」를 대상으로 그 語形을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 「二字漢字＋者」에 실려있는 漢字表記와 振り仮名의 대응관계를 밝혀낼 수 있었다. 또한, 그 결과를 반영하여 振り仮名 가 漢字表記의 일부밖에 병기되지 않은 것이나 전혀 없는 것에 대해서도 그 語形을 추정 할 수 있었다. 본고에서 밝혀낸 漢字表記와 振り仮名의 대응관계에 기초해 「者」를 포함한 漢字表記 모두의 語形을 확정할 수 있게 되었다. 즉, 『英和字彙』에 실려있는 모든 번역어의 語形을 확정할 수 있는 계기를 마련함으로써 앞으로 번역어를 구성하고 있는 漢字表記와 振り仮 名의 대응관계 전체를 밝혀낼 수 있는 근거가 마련되었다.
