This study analyzes the television adaptation The Dream Life of Mr. Kim (original Korean title: Seoul Jaga-e Daegieop Danineun Kim Bujang Iyagi), originally published as a web novel, in order to examine the reconstruction of the other-directed subject and its sociocultural implications. Although both the web novel and the drama share the same central events -namely, a real estate fraud and the protagonist’s social decline- this study focuses particularly on how the drama reconfigures the protagonist’s downfall and recovery through specific narrative devices. Drawing on David Riesman’s theory of the other-directed character and William F. Ogburn’s concept of cultural lag, the study analyzes how Manager Kim’s desire for approval, comparative disposition, and fixation on real estate culminate in the disintegration of his subjectivity. While the web novel presents his decline in a relatively linear form through contrasts in family values and workplace leadership styles, the drama foregrounds sensory devices such as daydreams, disillusionment, and panic, thereby reorganizing these conflicts as an internal process of rupture and collapse. The findings indicate that the drama does not portray Manager Kim’s recovery as economic resurgence or moral redemption. Rather, it reinterprets his downfall as a structural crisis arising from the collision between approval-oriented subjectivity and changing social conditions. His subsequent transformation is presented not as a complete shift toward inner-directed autonomy but as the possibility of limited autonomy, marked by a partial easing of his excessive responsiveness to others’ expectations.

본 연구는 웹소설 원작 드라마 〈서울 자가에 대기업 다니는 김 부장 이야기〉를 중심으로, 한국 중산층을 표상하는 타인지향적 주체의 붕괴와 재구성 과정을 사회문화적 맥락에서 고찰한다. 특히 동일한 서사 구조를 공유하는 웹소설과 드라마를 비교하며, 드라마 텍스트가 서사적 배열과 연출 장치의 변주를 통해 주인공의 몰락 및 회복을 어떻게 재맥락화하는지 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 데이비드 리스먼의 타인지향형 성격 이론과 윌리엄 오그번의 문화지체 개념을 준거 틀로 채택하여, 김 부장의 승인 욕구와 부동산을 향한 물신성이 파국으로 귀결되는 궤적을 추적한다. 원작 웹소설이 가족 간의 가치 대립과 리더십 유형의 대조를 통해 비교적 선형적인 하강 서사를 직조했다면, 드라마는 몽상, 환멸, 공황 등의 감각적 장치를 전면화하여 이러한 충돌을 주체 내부의 파열과 붕괴 과정으로 입체화한다. 연구 결과, 드라마 속 김 부장의 몰락은 단순한 개인의 실패가 아니라 승인 중심의 주체성이 변화된 사회 조건과 충돌하며 빚어낸 구조적 파열음으로 독해된다. 나아가 극 후반부 그가 보여주는 변화는 완전한 내면지향성으로의 전환이라기보다, 타인의 시선에 과잉 반응하던 감각을 덜어내고 감당 가능한 속도로 삶을 재배열하려는 '제한적 자율성'의 모색으로 평가할 수 있다.
