This paper analyzes the meaning of the green mise-en-scène in Park Chan-wook’s film No Other Choice and examines how it organizes the plausibility of violence not through narrative logic but through sensory inevitability. Although the film does not causally justify the murder committed by Mansu, an unemployed head of household, it leads the audience to experience his choice as something “inevitable.” This study argues that such an effect is constructed less through dialogue or psychological depiction than through the arrangement of space and color. The green tones repeatedly placed in key domestic spaces—such as the living room, kitchen, and master bedroom—do not signify nature or vitality; rather, they visualize a managed and regulated order. In this context, green does not function as a device that otherizes a violent character. Instead, it operates as a mise-en-scène that renders his world perceptible as a space of normality and stability. Through this spatial configuration, the audience comes to identify Mansu not as a monster or criminal, but as a middle-class patriarch. As a result, violence is perceived not as deviance, but as one possible means of maintaining the world he inhabits. This paper demonstrates that color functions as an aesthetic apparatus that organizes the spectator’s ethical judgment and structure of identification.

본 논문은 박찬욱 감독의 영화 〈어쩔수가없다〉에 나타난 녹색 미장센의 의미를 분석하고, 그것이 폭력의 개연성을 서사적 논리 대신 감각적 필연성으로 조직하는 방식을 고찰한다. 영화는 실직 가장 만수의 살인을 인과적으로 정당화하지 않으면서도, 관객으로 하여금 그의 선택을 ‘어쩔 수 없는 것‘처럼 체감하게 만든다. 본 연구는 이러한 효과가 인물의 대사나 심리 묘사보다 공간과 색채의 배치를 통해 구축된다는 점에 주목한다. 거실, 주방, 안방 등 주요 공간에 반복적으로 배치된 녹색은 자연과 생명의 색이 아니라, 관리되고 통제된 질서를 시각화한다. 이때 녹색은 폭력적 인물을 타자화하는 장치가 아니라, 그의 세계를 정상성과 안정의 공간으로 감각화하는 미장센으로 기능한다. 관객은 이 공간을 통해 만수를 괴물이나 범죄자가 아닌 중산층 가장으로 동일시하게 된다. 그 결과 폭력은 일탈이 아니라 세계를 유지하기 위한 하나의 선택지처럼 인식된다. 본 논문은 색채가 관객의 윤리적 판단과 동일시 구조를 조직하는 미학적 장치로 작동함을 밝힌다.
