This paper examines the expansion of temporality in photography by focusing on the blurred bodies and afterimages that recur throughout the photographs of Francesca Woodman. Photography has traditionally been understood as a medium that fixes a single moment in time, and Roland Barthes’s concept of ça-a-été has defined photographic images as evidence of a completed past. Woodman’s photographs, however, challenge this ontology by incorporating traces of movement, motion blur, and long exposure, thereby accumulating the flow of time and unfinished motion within a single frame. Drawing on Henri Bergson’s concept of durée, this study interprets Woodman’s blurred images as visualizations of continuous and layered time rather than frozen instants. The human body in her photographs is understood not as a fixed entity but as a processual being in formation, situated between presence and disappearance. Furthermore, the visual fusion of body and space reveals how Woodman’s work constructs a multilayered temporal structure in which past and present coexist. Through this analysis, the study proposes a reconsideration of photography as a medium that not only records moments but also makes visible the persistence and transformation of time.

본 연구는 프란체스카 우드만의 사진에 반복적으로 나타나는 흐릿한 신체와 잔상 표현에 주목하여, 사진 매체에 내재된 시간성이 어떻게 확장·재구성되는지를 분석한다. 전통적으로 사진은 단일한 순간을 고정하는 기록 매체로 이해되어 왔으며, 롤랑 바르트의 ‘그것이-존재-했음’이라는 명제는 사진을 완료된 과거의 증거로 규정해 왔다. 그러나 우드만의 사진은 장노출, 모션 블러, 중첩된 움직임 등을 통해 촬영 과정에서 발생하는 시간의 흐름과 미완의 운동을 이미지 안에 축적함으로써 이러한 사진 존재론에 균열을 일으킨다. 본 연구는 우드만의 흐릿한 이미지를 앙리 베르그송의 지속 개념을 중심으로 해석하며, 사진 속 신체를 고정된 실체가 아닌 형성 중인 과정적 존재로 파악한다. 또한 신체와 배경이 융합되는 시각적 효과를 통해, 우드만의 사진이 단절된 순간의 포착이 아닌 중층적 시간 구조와 연속성을 시각화하고 있음을 밝힌다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 사진을 정지된 시간의 기록이 아니라, 운동과 변화가 잔류하는 시간적 장으로 재사유할 가능성을 제시한다.
