This study investigates the formation and reconstruction of the identity of the Seoul Anglican Cathedral over the course of its one-hundred-year history by analyzing transformations in its architectural style and spatial structure. While previous studies have focused primarily on the question of indigenization and stylistic characteristics, this research applies semiotics and textual hermeneutics to interpret the cathedraFs architectural elements, liturgical objects, and spatial organization as a text. It further examines the narrative of the cathedral community understood as the narrative Subject in a Greimasian actantial structure, actively engaged in the construction and completion of the cathedral. The study argues that the cathedral may be explained as a Western church incorporating Korean elements, embodying a form of norm-centered translational catholicity. Moving beyond the binary framework of Westernization and indigenization, this research interprets the cathedral within a dialectical relationship between normative catholicity and translational catholicity, viewing it as an ethical narrative process through which the cathedral community, as the narrative Subject, has upheld its commitment to the catholic Church. The findings demonstrate that the cathedral’s identity gradually shifted from an initial orientation toward normative catholicity to a form of translational catholicity in which catholicity is enacted and performed within the context of local culture. By integrating architectural form with liturgical expression and analyzing the narrative agency of the ecclesial Subject, this study offers an interdisciplinary reinterpretation that combines structural analysis with humanistic reflection.

본 연구는 성공회 서울주교좌성당의 100년 역사 속에서 건축양식과 공 간 구조의 변화를 분석하여 대성당의 정체성 형성과 재구성 과정을 규명 하고자 한다. 기존 연구가 대성당의 토착화 여부와 양식적 특성에 주목했 다면，본 연구는 기호학과 텍스트 해석학의 방법론을 적용하여 대성당의 건축 요소，성물, 공간 구조를 텍스트로 분석하고 대성당 건립과 완성에 관여한 주체의 서사를 검토하였다. 그 결과 본 연구는 대성당을 한식 요 소를 수용한 서양성당으로서 ‘규범 중심의 번역적 보편교회’라 설명하였 다. 또 본 연구는 기존 연구의 서구화와 토착화라는 이분법적 구도를 넘 어，대성당을 규범적 보편성과 번역적 보편성 사이의 변증법적 관계 속에 서 공동체가 보편교회를 향한 약속을 지킨 윤리적 서사 과정으로 해석했 다. 이를 통해 대성당의 정체성은 규범적 보편성을 지향하던 초기 단계에 서 보편성을 지역 문화 안에서 수행하는 번역적 보편성의 형태로 점차 재 구성되었음을 확인하였다. 이에 본 연구는 교회의 정체성을 건축양식에 한정하지 않고 그 양식이 표현하는 전례와 통합적으로 분석했으며 교회 주체의 서사를 이해함으로써 구조 분석의 결과를 인문학적으로 재해석했 다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.
