Recent trends in preaching show a notable shift: rebuke-oriented sermons that confront sin have weakened, while healing-oriented sermons emphasizing comfort have become prominent. This transformation accompanies the risk of weakening rebuke's theological function of confronting audiences with sin to prompt repentance. Moreover, this discourse shift has relied primarily on experiential reflections and normative theological discussions, lacking empirical research that systematically analyzes how sermon content influences attitude and behavioral changes via emotional responses. To address this gap, this study conceptualizes preaching as persuasive communication and empirically verifies pathways through which rebuke and healing sermons lead to faith-based attitudes and behavioral intentions via guilt, shame, and comfort. It also examines the moderating role of spiritual maturity. An online experiment with 200 Christians employed message appeal theory and the O-S-O-R model, with effects analyzed using PROCESS macro. Results showed healing sermons significantly reduced guilt and shame while increasing comfort. Guilt formed a positive persuasion pathway strengthening attitudes and behavioral intentions, whereas shame weakened attitudes. Comfort provided emotional stability but did not translate into attitudes or behavioral intentions. Spiritual maturity showed limited moderating effects only at the comfort formation stage, with no systematic effects across the persuasion pathway. This study contributes in three ways. First, it applies experimental methodology to homiletics, empirically revealing psychological mechanisms of sermon effectiveness. Second, it establishes design principles for rebuke sermons by demonstrating that they should promote guilt rather than shame. Third, it provides guidelines for balanced sermon design by confirming both emotional effects and persuasive limitations of healing sermons.

최근 설교 현장에서는 죄를 지적하고 회개를 촉구하는 책망설교가 약화되는 반면, 위로와 공감을 강조하는 치유설교가 전면화되는 경향이 두드러진다. 이러한 변화는 교 회 부흥과 시대적 요구라는 목회적 맥락에서 이해될 수 있으나 책망이 지닌 신학적 본질, 즉 청중에게 죄의 실재를 직면하게 하여 회개와 회심을 촉구하는 기능이 약화 될 위험을 동반한다. 더욱이 이러한 설교 담론의 전환은 주로 목회 현장의 경험적 성 찰과 규범적 신학 논의를 중심으로 이루어져 왔을 뿐, 설교내용이 청중의 정서반응을 거쳐 태도와 행동 변화로 이어지는 심리적 과정을 체계적으로 분석한 실증 연구에 기 반하지 않았다는 점에서 방법론적 한계를 지닌다. 본 연구는 이러한 학문적 공백을 보완하기 위해 설교를 설득적 커뮤니케이션 행위로 전제하고, 책망설교와 치유설교가 죄책감, 수치심, 위로감을 매개로 신앙적 태도 및 행동 의도에 이르는 경로를 실증적으로 검증하였다. 더 나아가 청중의 신앙 성숙도가 이러한 설득 과정에서 어떠한 영 향을 미치는지 규명하였다. 이를 위해 기독교인 200명을 대상으로 온라인 실험을 실 시하였으며, 메시지 소구 이론과 O-S-O-R 모델을 이론적 틀로 설정하고 PROCESS macro를 활용한 매개 및 조절효과 분석을 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 치유설교는 책망설 교에 비해 죄책감과 수치심을 유의미하게 감소시키고 위로감을 증가시켰다. 죄책감은 태도와 행동 의도를 강화하는 긍정적 설득 경로를 형성한 반면, 수치심은 태도를 약 화시켜 설득효과를 저해하는 것으로 나타났다. 위로감은 정서적 안정을 제공하였으나 태도나 행동 의도로 직접 연결되지 않았다. 신앙 성숙도는 치유설교의 위로감 형성 단계에서만 제한적 조절효과를 보였으며, 전체 설득 경로를 체계적으로 조절하는 효 과는 확인되지 않았다. 본 연구는 세 가지 측면에서 학술적·실천적 기여를 한다. 첫째, 양적 연구가 드문 설교학 분야에 실험 연구 방법론을 적용하여 설교 효과의 심리적 작동 기제를 실증적으로 규명하였다. 둘째, 죄책감과 수치심의 차별적 설득 경로를 입 증함으로써 책망설교가 수치심이 아닌 죄책감을 촉진해야 한다는 설계 원리를 밝혔다. 셋째, 치유설교의 정서적 효과와 설득적 한계를 동시에 확인함으로써 책망과 치유의 균형적 설계를 위한 구체적 지침을 제공하였다.
