The purpose of this study is to reinterpret Krumboltz’s Planned Happenstance Theory from a Christian counseling perspective and to explore the theological meaning of chance events experienced in the process of career exploration, with particular emphasis on the doctrine of divine providence. In contemporary society, rapid technological innovations, including the expansion of generative artificial intelligence, and changes in employment structures have intensified uncertainty in career environments. These transformations also demand new interpretive frameworks for Christians in understanding vocation and making faith-based career decisions. Against this backdrop, the present study critically examines the limitations of traditional career counseling theories that presuppose rationality, predictability, and linear career development, and reconstructs Planned Happenstance Theory through the lens of Christian providence. Using a literature review methodology, the study analyzes the core concepts and happenstance skills of Planned Happenstance Theory and proposes a theological framework for understanding chance by examining the concept of providence, the structure of primary and secondary causation, and comparisons with chance theory, fatalism, and deism. In particular, the non-linear view of career development inherent in Planned Happenstance Theory is situated within a providential structure in which God’s sovereignty and human responsibility coexist, thereby offering a Christian account of career development that does not reduce chance to randomness or deterministic fate. Furthermore, the study reconceptualizes the happenstance skills, curiosity, flexibility, persistence, optimism, and risk-taking, as “providential happenstance skills,” expanding them into faith-based and adaptive capacities that enable individuals to interpret chance events within God’s guidance and translate them into responsible career actions. These providential happenstance skills are understood not as one-time techniques but as process-oriented capacities that operate throughout the entire career exploration process, fostering career adaptability through a cyclical dynamic of faith-based interpretation, action, and reflection. Based on this theoretical reconstruction, the study proposes a five-stage Christian career counseling process grounded in providential happenstance skills, cognition, interpretation, training, action, and reflection, and presents practical directions for linking chance experiences to faith-based meaning-making and concrete career behavior in counseling settings. This study is significant in that it moves beyond reductionist views of chance as meaningless events or fatalistic necessity, and offers theoretical and practical criteria for an integrated model of Christian career counseling that enables believers to reflect on and re-narrate career uncertainty within the framework of divine providence.

이 연구는 Krumboltz의 계획된 우연이론(Planned Happenstance Theory)을 기독교 상담학적 관점에서 재해석하고, 진로탐색 과정에서 경험되는 우연적 사건의 신학적 의미를 하나님의 섭리론을 중심으로 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 현대 사회는 생성 형 인공지능의 확산을 비롯한 급격한 기술 혁신과 고용 구조의 변화로 인해 진로 환 경의 불확실성이 심화되고 있으며, 이러한 변화는 기독교인에게도 소명 이해와 신앙 적 진로 결정에 있어 새로운 해석의 틀을 요구하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 기존 진로 상담이론이 전제해 온 합리성, 예측 가능성, 선형적 진로관의 한계를 비판적으로 검토 하고, 우연적 사건을 진로 발달의 핵심 요소로 조명하는 계획된 우연이론을 기독교 섭리론의 관점에서 재구성하였다. 이를 위해 문헌연구 방법을 활용하여 계획된 우연 이론의 주요 개념과 우연기술을 분석하고, 섭리의 개념, 제1원인–제2원인 구조, 우연 론·운명론·이신론과의 비교를 통해 우연에 대한 성경적 이해의 신학적 틀을 제시하였 다. 특히 본 연구는 계획된 우연이론의 비선형적 진로관을 하나님의 주권과 인간의 책임적 선택이 공존하는 섭리 구조 속에 위치시킴으로써, 우연을 무작위적 사건이나 운명적 필연으로 환원하지 않는 기독교적 진로 이해를 이론적으로 해명하고자 하였 다. 아울러 호기심, 유연성, 인내, 낙관성, 위험감수로 구성된 계획된 우연기술을 ‘섭리적 우연기술’로 재개념화하여, 우연처럼 인식되는 사건을 하나님의 인도하심 안에서 해석하고 의미화하며 책임 있는 진로 행동으로 전환하는 신앙적·적응적 역량으로 확 장하였다. 이러한 섭리적 우연기술은 단회적 기술이 아니라 진로 탐색 전 과정에서 반복적으로 작동하는 과정적 역량으로 이해되며, 신앙적 해석과 행동, 성찰의 순환을 통해 진로 적응력을 형성하는 구조를 지닌다. 이를 토대로 본 연구는 인지, 해석, 훈 련, 행동, 성찰의 다섯 단계로 구성된 섭리적 우연기술 기반 기독교 진로상담 과정을 제안하고, 상담 장면에서 우연 경험을 신앙적 의미화와 실제적 진로 행동으로 연계할 수 있는 적용 방향을 제시하였다. 이러한 논의는 우연을 무의미한 사건이나 운명적 필연으로 환원하는 관점을 넘어, 기독교인이 하나님의 섭리 안에서 진로 불확실성을 신앙적으로 성찰하고 재서사화하도록 돕는 통합적 기독교 진로상담의 이론적 확장과 실천적 통합을 위한 기준을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
