This study examines the athlete classification system in disability sport, focusing on the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) commitment to inclusion from the perspective of ableism. Drawing on an analysis of official IPC documents, it explores the normative structures and logics of subject formation through which athletes are differentiated and hierarchized within the Paralympic institutional context. First, the study examines how the concepts of ability, disability, and normality are reconfigured in sport, highlighting the normative tensions captured by the notion of the “Paralympic paradox.” Second, it draws on post-structuralist theories of subject formation to explain how competitive sport produces particular sporting subjects through ability-based norms and hierarchies. Finally, the analysis demonstrates that IPC classification functions not only as a technical mechanism for fair competition but also as a process of subjectification that reproduces ability-centered hierarchies and exclusion.

본 논문은 국제패럴림픽위원회(IPC)의 핵심 목표로 제시되는 ‘포용’ 에 주목하여, 장애인 선수 분류 체계를 능력주의(ableism) 관점에서 분석 한다. 이를 위해 IPC의 공식 문서에 나타난 규범적 구조와 주체 형성의 논리를 검토하고, 패럴림픽이라는 제도적 맥락 속에서 장애인 선수를 분 리하고 위계화하는 실천이 어떠한 방식으로 조직되고 정당화되는지를 규명한다. 논문은 먼저 능력, 장애, 정상성 개념에 대한 이론적 논의를 토대로 스포츠 맥락에서 이들 개념이 재구성되는 양상을 분석하고, ‘패 럴림픽의 역설’을 통해 장애인 스포츠에 내재한 규범적 긴장을 고찰한 다. 이어 후기구조주의적 주체 형성 이론과 능력주의 개념을 바탕으로, 경쟁 스포츠가 능력에 기초한 규범과 위계를 통해 특정한 스포츠 주체 를 생산하는 방식을 이론적으로 해명한다. 끝으로 IPC의 선수 분류 체계 를 비판적으로 검토함으로써, 분류가 공정한 경쟁을 가능하게 하는 제도 적 장치인 동시에 능력 중심의 위계와 배제를 재생산하는 주체화 메커 니즘으로 작동함을 논증한다.
