This study analyzes the gap between the Olympic ideal of pacifism and its practical impotence in international politics through sociological and anthropological lenses. As a global ritual, the Olympics foster communitas through symbolic apparatuses like the torch relay, yet this fails to translate into substantive peace. Drawing on Niklas Luhmann, the functional differentiation of modern society ensures that sports and political systems operate independently; thus, the Olympic peace message remains mere environmental noise reinterpreted by political power codes. Furthermore, per Victor Turner, the transition of the Olympics from sacred liminal rituals to liminoid phenomena of voluntary consumption has stripped the event of its power to transform conflict structures. Consequently, the Olympics function not as a direct instrument for stopping war but as a cultural showcase and rehearsal stage for practicing the values of peace.
