This paper examines the works of the Belgian artist Luc Tuymans, who exerts significant influence on contemporary painters through the ‘Tuymans Effect,’ a term coined by curator Jordan Kantor to describe the simplified and discolored style of deskilled painterly methodology that resists the traditional sense of skilled painting. To analyze Tuymans’s work, this study considers the works of Gerhard Richter, whose practice has influenced painters of Tuymans’s generation, and examines the deskilled painterly aspect of the Tuymans Effect, focusing on images and color, as well as its relationship to mechanically captured images, such as photographs and film-stills. Furthermore, this paper investigates the critical stance toward painting implied by the Tuymans Effect, examining the symbolic unrepresentability embedded in deskilling; the study ultimately seeks to identify a new trajectory of painting within painterly genealogies that have been fragmented and sporadically unfolding since the 1980s postmodernist era.
