This study examines Walter Berten’s unpublished text, Annotations on Literature Concerning Gymnastics and Dance, written in 1929, to suggest the discourse of German dance in the 1920s from a contemporary perspective. While existing dance historiography often relies on a retrospective, teleological genealogy culminating in Rudolf von Laban, Berten juxtaposes Jaques-Dalcroze, Bode, and Laban without hierarchy and conceptualizes gymnastics and dance through an integrated theory of the Body. He identifies rhythm, space, and holistic education as their shared foundation and situates these approaches within the emerging “new classicism” of the period. The analysis shows that Berten’s text reveals both the emancipatory potential and the disciplinary risks embedded in bodily practices. By introducing and interpreting this rare document, the study offers an alternative, non-teleological framework for understanding the intellectual landscape of German dance in the late Weimar era.

본 연구는 1929년에 쓰여진 발터 베르텐의 미공개 텍스트 「체조와 춤에 관한 문헌 및 주석」을 발굴·분석하여 1920년대 독일 무용 담론을 바라본 동시대인의 시각을 제시하고자 한다. 기존 무용사 연구가 라반을 정점으로 하는 발전론적 계보학에 의존해온 반면, 베르텐은 달크로즈·보데·라반을 비위계적으로 병렬하며 체조와 무용을 신체 이론(Theory of the Body)의 차원에서 통합적으로 사유했다. 그는 리듬·공간·전인교육을 세 방향의 공통 기반으로 제시하고, ‘새로운 고전성’이라는 시대정신 속에서 1920년대 무용의 가능성을 탐색했다. 본 연구는 이 텍스트가 체조·무용·음악의 경계를 넘나들며 신체 담론의 해방성과 통제 가능성을 동시에 드러내는 자료임 을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 1920년대 독일 무용을 비결과론적·다원적 관점에서 조망할 수 있는 새로운 분석 틀 을 제시한다.
