This study examined the embodied, emotional, relational, and spatial experiences of undergraduate dance students participating in an improvisational dance class using a narrative approach. Six third-year female modern dance majors were purposively selected, and data were collected through participant observation and QR-based narrative journals over ten weeks. Data were analyzed by categorizing meaning units based on Clandinin and Connelly’s three-dimensional narrative inquiry framework. The findings showed that students gradually overcame initial unfamiliarity and anxiety, developing greater bodily trust and expressive freedom. Contact improvisation facilitated emotional shifts from tension to trust and empathy, enhancing relational communication. Serendipitous movements and heightened awareness of space and energy promoted self-awareness and creative exploration. These results suggest that improvisational dance functions as a holistic learning context beyond technique-centered training and should be considered a core component of university dance education.

본 연구는 즉흥무용 수업에 참여한 무용전공 대학생들의 신체적, 정서적, 관계적, 공간적 경험을 내러티브 관점에 서 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 수도권 A대학교 현대무용 전공 3학년 여학생 6명을 의도적 표집으로 선정하고 10주 간 참여관찰과 QR 내러티브 인터뷰를 수행하였다. 수집된 자료는 Clandinin과 Connelly의 3차원 구조를 준거로 의미 단위를 분석하고 반복 비교하여 범주화하였다. 연구 결과 학습자들은 처음의 낯섦과 불안을 점차 극복하며 감각과 정서를 통합하는 과정을 경험하였고 신체에 대한 신뢰와 표현의 자유를 확장하였다. 컨택 즉흥에서는 긴장 에서 신뢰와 공감으로 이어지는 정서의 전이가 나타나 관계적 소통 능력이 강화되었다. 우연히 발견된 움직임과 공간 및 에너지에 대한 감각은 자기 인식과 창작적 사고를 자극하여 새로운 움직임 어휘 탐색으로 이어졌다. 이러 한 경험은 즉흥무용이 기술 중심 학습을 넘어 신체, 정서, 관계, 공간을 통합하는 전인적 학습과 예술적 성찰의 장 으로 기능함을 보여준다. 본 연구는 즉흥무용을 대학 무용교육의 핵심 학습 모듈로 재구성할 필요성을 제기한다.
