This study analyzed the Buddhist linguistic perspectives presented in Kim Seong-dong's Mandala (1979) and shed new light on the imagery of Buddhist youth in the 1970s. Previous studies on Mandala have focused on the validity of the work's social concerns, the appropriateness of the use of traditional Buddhist doctrine, and its adherence to the modern Bildungsroman format. These discussions took notice of the historical, religious, and biographical aspects of Kim Seong-dong's life who went through precarious youth as a monk in the 1970s. However, these discussions have not fully elucidated how the Buddhist imagination of language operates specifically within the narrative structure of the novel. Kim Seong-dong's Mandala emphasizes the nature of Buddhist imagination within a narrative of profanazione. People used to believe that the core of Buddhist thought stems from the negation of secular language and resulting existence. However, this perspective alone fails to effectively explain the Buddhist language of Mandala and the significance of Buddhist youth. It is because, contrary to common idea about Buddhism and Buddhist culture, the young monks in Mandala verbalize critical reflections on unresolved issues. The novel explores the existence of Buddhist youth within the realities of human beings. From this perspective, this paper analyzed the Buddhist language expressed in Kim Seong-dong's Mandala and examined the significance of Buddhist youth in the 1970s as portrayed in it.

이 글은 김성동의 『만다라』(1979)에 나타난 불교적 언어관을 분석하고, 이를 통해 1970년대 불교 청년의 형상화 양상을 새롭게 구명하는 데 목적이 있다. 『만다라』에 대 한 기존 연구들은 작품에 나타난 사회적 문제의식의 타당성, 전통적 불교교리 활용의 적절성, 근대적 성장소설 형식에의 충실성을 중심으로 논의하였다. 이러한 논의들은 김성동이 1970년대에 승려로서 불안한 청년시절을 보냈다는 시대적·종교적·전기적 사 실에 주목한 것이었다. 그러나 이는 작품의 서사 구조 속에서 언어에 관한 불교적 상상 력이 구체적으로 어떻게 작동했는지 충분히 해명한 것은 아니었다. 김성동의 『만다라』는 세속화의 서사 속에서 불교적 상상력의 성격이 강조되는 작품이다. 불교적 사유의 핵심은 세속적인 언어와 이에 따른 존재의 부정에서 비롯된다고 평가되어 왔다. 그러나 이러한 관점만으로는 『만다라』의 불교적 언어관과 불교 청년의 의미를 효과적으로 설명하지 못한다. 불교와 불교문화에 대한 통념과 달리 『만다라』 속의 젊은 승려들은 풀리지 않는 화두에 대한 비판적 사유를 언어화하면서, 중생의 현실에서 불교 청년의 존재성을 탐구하기 때문이다. 이와 같은 시각에서 본고는 김성동의 『만다라』에 나타난 불교적 언어관을 분석하고, 이를 통해 형상화되는 1970년대 불교 청년의 의미를 고찰하였다.
