The purpose of this study is to examine how residing in Korea has affected migrant artists living in the country. For this study, a total of three rounds of semi-structured interviews were conducted with two long-term resident artists whose backgrounds differed in terms of region of origin, age, gender, field of artistic activity, and stage in their artistic life cycle. The findings show that both participants began their artistic careers under the influence of people around them, and that migration to Korea served as an important turning point that expanded their lives as artists. Although the participants experienced feelings of unfairness regarding visa systems, support policies, employment relations, and social perceptions, they also had complex and multifaceted experiences, including building deep and long-term relationships with Korean individuals. During their stay in Korea, they sought to represent the voices of immigrants through their artistic practices, convey social messages in their works, and use art as a means to heal the challenges faced by Korean society. This study focuses on migrant artists who have resided in Korea for an extended period. Future research may expand on these findings by analyzing migrant artists’ works to further explore the impact of migration, as well as by examining the experiences of short-term resident migrant artists.

본 연구의 목적은 국내 이주민 예술가들의 한국 체류가 그들에게 미친 영향을 연구 하는 것이다. 연구를 위해서 출신 지역, 나이, 성별, 활동 영역, 예술가로서의 생애주기 등이 모두 다른 두 명의 장기체류 예술가를 중심으로 총 3회에 걸친 반구조화 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 연구결과, 이들은 주변 지인의 영향으로 예술을 시작하게 되었으며, 한국 으로의 이주는 이들이 예술가로서 삶을 확장하는 중요한 계기로 작용하였다. 이들은 비자제도, 지원정책, 고용관계, 사회적 인식 등에 있어서 부당함을 느끼기도 하지만 한 국에서 한국인들과의 깊고 장기적인 유대관계 쌓아가는 등 복합적인 경험을 하였다. 한국에서 체류하며 이들은 예술적 활동을 통해 이민자들의 목소리를 대변하기도 하고, 사회적인 메시지를 작품에 담고, 또 한국 사회가 당면한 어려움을 예술로 치유하고자 노력하기도 하였다. 본 연구는 장기적으로 체류한 이주민 예술가들을 대상으로 연구를 진행하였는데, 향후 이주민 예술가들의 작품 분석을 통해서 본 이주의 영향이나 단기 체류 이주민 예술가들에 대한 연구 등으로 연구를 확장해갈 수 있을 것이다.
