As part of an ongoing exploration of East Asian women’s literature, this study examines the forms and meanings of waka (와카) appreciation among Japanese women in the Heian period (헤이안 시대), with a particular focus on the poems included in Kagero Nikki (가게로 일기). While waka culture was largely centered on aristocratic women, its practice extended beyond class boundaries to include a wider range of participants. Within this text, women’s waka functioned not only as a medium for emotional exchange with their husbands but also as an important vehicle of communication with family members and other women. In particular, Michitsuna’s mother and her contemporaries expressed their emotions autonomously and mediated relationships irrespective of gender. In the context of the exchange of waka poems among women, the meaning of consolation and solidarity emerged. In this sense, Kagero Nikki can be regarded as a literary space that reveals personal narratives and the potential for female agency and solidarity.

본고는 동아시아 여성문학에 대한 지속적 탐구의 일환으로, <가게로 일기>에 수록된 와카를 중심으로 헤이안 시대 여성들의 시가 향유 양상과 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 와카 향유는 귀족 여성에게서 주로 이루어졌으나, 그 창작 주체는 계층의 한계를 넘어 다양하게 확산되었다. 작품 속 여성들의 와카는 남편과의 정서 교류 는 물론이고 가족 및 여성 간 소통의 매개로 기능하였다. 특히 미치쓰나 어머니를 비롯한 여성들은 남녀를 불문하고 감정을 주체적으로 표현하며 관계를 조율하였 다. 여성 간 와카 증답에서는 위로와 연대의 의미가 두드러졌으며, 이를 통해 <가 게로 일기>는 개인의 서사이자 여성 주체성과 연대 가능성을 드러내는 문학적 공 간으로 볼 수 있다.
