This study examines the necessity of East Asian Ancient studies, focusing on the study of Kakino Motono Hitomaro, known in Japan as the “Enigmatic Poet Saint.” The following conclusions were drawn. As a discipline that links the geographical space of East Asia with ancient times, East Asian ancient studies faces methodological limitations when research is confined to individual academic fields, making it difficult to arrive at comprehensive and substantive conclusions. To understand Kakino Motono Hitomaro’s literature and poetic character, interdisciplinary research is necessary, encompassing not only philological studies but also linguistics, folklore, literature, history, and political science. Furthermore, international cooperation within the Chinese character cultural sphere is necessary. Therefore, the necessity for ancient East Asian studies to use interdisciplinary and international methods cannot be overemphasized.

본 논문은 東아시아古代學 연구의 필요성을 일본에서 ‘수수께끼의 歌聖’이라 불 리는 柿本人麻呂(가키노 모토노 히토마로)의 연구를 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. ‘東아시아’라는 공간과 ‘古代’라는 시간과 관련된 학문인 ‘東아시아古代學’은 개 별 학문분야에서의 연구로는 종합적이고 실체적인 결론을 도출하기 어려우며, 방 법론적으로도 적절하다고 볼 수 없다. 柿本人麻呂의 문학과 歌人的 성격을 파악하 기 위해서도, 문헌학적 연구를 비롯하여 언어학ㆍ민속학ㆍ문학ㆍ역사학ㆍ정치학간의 학제적인 연구도 필요하고, 한자문화권이라는 입장에서 국제적 협력의 연구도 필요한 것이다. 이러한 점에서 학제적ㆍ국제적 방법에 의한 東아시아古代學 연구의 필요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않으리라 생각된다.
