The purpose of this paper is to examine the discussion of normativity that can be raised within the Theory of Value of Unification Thought, focusing on Korsgaard’s concept of “Reflective Endorsement.” According to Unification Thought, human beings are entities that realize value through free will. However, to possess free will, a “reflective ability” to deliberate on one’s own desires based on self-consciousness is required. Therefore, within the structural framework of Unification Thought, the process of human value judgment must involve a self-reflective process of evaluating one's desires. However, when a normative demand is presented to a being endowed with reflective ability, the “normative question”—“Why should I?”—is inevitably raised. This is a problem that can also emerge within the value theory of Unification Thought, which must be able to provide a sufficient answer to such questions of normativity. Before making a value judgment based on desire, humans undergo a procedure of “reflective endorsement” to determine whether that desire is worthy of approval. Utilizing Korsgaard’s framework, this paper argues that for a desire to pass reflective endorsement without leading to self-contradiction, it must be grounded in the “Universal Image” and the “Whole Purpose.” Since the very fact that humans can pursue value is derived from the “Universal Image” they possess, pursuing desires that betray the “Universal Image” and the “Whole Purpose” is a self-destructive act that undermines the foundation of one‘s own pursuit of value. In other words, the claim that priority must be given to the “Universal Image” and the “Whole Purpose” can be interpreted as: for a reflective human being to act without falling into self-contradiction, their actions must necessarily be based on these two concepts. Finally, this paper suggests that from the perspective of Unification Thought, Korsgaard’s discourse can be established as a more specific and comprehensive ethical system when it is complemented by the concept of ‘holistic humanity rooted in Shimjung (心情).’

본고의 목적은 코스가드의 ‘반성적 승인’ 개념에 주목하여 통일사상 가치론에서 제기될 수 있는 규범성 논의를 고찰하는 것이다. 통일사상에 따르면 인간은 자유의 지에 따라 가치를 실현하는 존재다. 그런데 인간이 자유의지를 갖기 위해서는 자아 의식을 바탕으로 자신의 욕망을 반성하는 ‘반성능력’이 요구된다. 따라서 통일사상 의 구조 안에서 인간의 가치판단 과정은 자신의 욕망을 반성하는 자기 반성적 과정 을 포함해야 한다. 그러나 반성 능력을 갖는 존재에게 어떤 규범성이 주어질 때 “왜 그래야만 하는가?”라고 하는 규범성 물음이 제기된다. 이는 통일사상 가치론 안에서 도 제기될 수 있는 문제로, 통일사상은 이러한 규범성 논의에 대해서 답을 제공할 수 있어야 한다. 인간은 자신의 욕망에 따라서 가치판단을 내리기에 앞서 자신의 욕망이 승인될 수 있는 욕망인지 반성하는 ‘반성적 승인’의 절차를 거친다. 본고는 코스가드의 논의 를 활용하여 자기모순에 빠지지 않고, 어떤 욕망이 반성적 승인을 통과하기 위해서는 ‘보편상’과 ‘전체목적’에 기반해야 한다는 점을 논증했다. 인간이 가치를 추구할 수 있는 존재라는 사실은 인간이 갖는 보편상에 의해서 도출되는 것이므로 보편상 과 전체목적을 배반하는 욕망의 추구는 스스로 자신의 가치 추구의 근거를 부인하 는 자기 모순적 행위다. 즉, 통일사상의 구조 안에서 보편상과 전체목적에 우선성을 둬야 한다는 주장은 반성 능력을 갖춘 인간이 자기모순에 빠지지 않고 행위하려면 반드시 보편상과 전체목적에 근거해야 한다는 주장으로 재해석할 수 있다. 마지막으 로 본고는 통일사상의 관점에서 코스가드의 논의가 ‘심정을 근원으로 하는 통전적 인간성’에 의해 보완될 때, 보다 구체적이고 포괄적인 윤리체계로서 정립될 수 있다 고 제안한다.
