This article examines Hyun Ki-young’s novel Jejudouda as a decolonial literary practice that reconfigures the relationship between the state and community through anarchist thought. Discourses on the Jeju April 3 Incident have largely concentrated on narratives of “victimhood” and “suffering,” leaving the political dimensions of autonomous practices and popular resistance carried out by the Jeju people during the post-liberation period suspended under the deferral of “historical evaluation.” Against this backdrop, this article demonstrates that Jejudouda reconstructs April 3 not as a mere history of victimization, but as a collective struggle to restore an autonomous order in resistance to the violence inherent in the formation of the modern state. First, the article analyzes the novel’s mythic origins and ritual scenes set in the liberation period in order to examine the sensibility of self-generated order accumulated within the Jeju community. The Saekkot-al Halmangdang myth presents the possibility of non-centralized solidarity that does not depend on a singular center of authority, while the liberation celebration and the funeral of Kim Yong-cheol illustrate how principles of mutual aid and autonomy were practiced prior to institutional state governance. These narrative devices function by reappropriating the authority of meaning-making, long monopolized by the state, through communal memory and ritual, thereby transforming Jeju into a decolonial space that exposes fractures within the violent logic of state order. The article then explores different layers of anarchist thought through the contrast between the characters Jang Yeong-bal and Kim Seong-ju. While Jang Yeong-bal emerges as a subject who practices autonomy and mutual aid through the space of the “Libera Store,” Kim Seong-ju bears witness to the exclusionary violence of the nation-state through his body and language, both shattered by state violence. In particular, Kim’s disintegrated speech and anti- linguistic utterances reveal forms of suffering that cannot be absorbed by existing political discourse, extending anarchism into an ethical site for thinking the world after violence. Ultimately, the notion of a “state outside the state” presented in Jejudouda constitutes a literary proposal that explores the possibility of communities organizing life autonomously even after state violence. This article confirms that by re-situating the experience of the Jeju April 3 Incident on an intellectual-historical horizon through anarchism, Jejudouda offers an interpretive framework for reflecting on the tragedy of modern Korean history in terms of the intertwined problems of the state, community, and ethics.

이 글은 현기영의 장편소설 『제주도우다』를 아나키즘적 사유를 매개로 국가와 공동체 의 관계를 재구성하는 탈식민적 문학 실천으로 고찰하였다. 그동안 제주 4‧3 담론은 ‘희생’ 과 ‘수난’의 서사에 집중하며, 해방기 제주 민중의 자치적 실천과 항쟁의 정치성을 ‘역사적 평가’의 유보 속에 남겨두었다. 이에 이 글은 『제주도우다』가 4‧3을 단순한 피해의 역사가 아닌, 근대 국가 형성기의 폭력에 맞서 자치의 질서를 회복하려 했던 항쟁으로 재구성하고 있음을 규명한다. 먼저 소설의 신화적 기원과 해방공간의 의례적 장면을 분석하여 제주 공동체에 축적된 자생적 질서의 감각을 검토한다. 새콧알할망당 신화는 단일한 중심에 의존하지 않은 비중 앙적 결속의 가능성을 제시하며, 해방 기념 잔치와 김용철의 장례 서사는 국가의 제도적 관리 이전에 상호부조와 자치의 원리가 어떻게 실천되었는지를 보여준다. 이러한 서사적 장치들은 국가가 독점해 온 의미화의 권한을 공동체의 기억과 의례가 재전유하는 방식으로 작동하며, 제주의 공간을 국가 질서의 폭력에 균열을 내는 탈식민적 사유의 장으로 변모시킨다. 이어 장영발과 김성주의 대비를 통해 아나키즘적 사유의 층위를 고찰한다. 장영발이 ‘리베라 상회’를 중심으로 자치와 상호부조를 실천하는 주체라면, 김성주는 국가폭력에 의해 파괴된 신체와 언어를 통해 국민국가의 배타적 폭력성을 증언하는 존재다. 특히 김성 주의 해체된 언어와 반언어적 발화는 기존의 정치적 언어가 포섭하지 못한 고통을 드러내며, 아나키즘을 폭력 이후의 세계를 윤리적으로 사유하게 만드는 감응의 자리로 확장시 킨다. 결국 『제주도우다』의 ‘국가 밖의 국가’는 국가폭력 이후에도 공동체가 스스로 삶을 조 직할 수 있다는 가능성을 탐색하는 문학적 제안이다. 이 글은 『제주도우다』가 아나키즘을 통해 4‧3의 경험을 사상사적 지평 위에 재배치함으로써, 한국 현대사의 비극을 국가와 공동체, 윤리의 문제로 성찰할 수 있는 해석적 준거를 제시했음을 확인한다.
