This article examines Geunyeok Seohwajing(槿域書畵徵), compiled by Oh Se-chang, an intellectual of the Patriotic Enlightenment period, with the aim of elucidating the patriotic-enlightenment consciousness embedded in its background of compilation and editorial principles. In particular, this study reconsiders Geunyeok Seohwajing not merely as a collection of calligraphic and pictorial materials or an art-historical reference, but as a cultural-historical work that embodies an intellectual’s practical engagement in patriotic enlightenment through the preservation and transmission of national culture. To this end, Chapter 2 explores the formative conditions of Oh Se-chang’s patriotic-enlightenment consciousness by examining three aspects: the interpreter(yeokgwan) family tradition and the accumulation of external political awareness, the material foundations that enabled large-scale collection of calligraphy and painting, and the formation of a family tradition characterized by an interest in calligraphy, painting, and evidential scholarship. Chapter 3 then analyzes the ways in which Oh Se-chang’s patriotic-enlightenment consciousness is manifested and put into practice in Geunyeok Seohwajing. It first reviews his enlightenment consciousness as expressed through journalistic activities and enlightenment movements, and clarifies how this intellectual orientation led to the compilation of Geunyeok Seohwajing as a project aimed at the systematic organization of national culture. Furthermore, the article examines Oh’s pursuit of a structured cultural-historical narrative through evidential writing based on the cross-examination of extensive materials, along with his editorial stance toward objective cultural- historical description achieved through the balanced allocation of textual space without personal bias. Through this discussion, the article suggests that Geunyeok Seohwajing can be understood as the outcome of an intellectual response to the perceived crisis of national culture under the historical conditions of the Patriotic Enlightenment period, representing an effort to seek cultural self-strengthening. Ultimately, this study argues that Geunyeok Seohwajing may be regarded as a cultural- historical work in which Oh Se-chang’s patriotic-enlightenment consciousness is most coherently articulated.

이 글은 애국계몽기 지식인인 吳世昌의 『槿域書畵徵』을 대상으로 하여 이 저술의 집 편 배경과 편찬 방식에 내재된 애국계몽 인식을 고찰하고자 한 것이다. 이에 『근역서화징』 이 서화 자료 모음이나 미술사적 기록 그 자체에 머무는 것이 아니라 한 지식인이 민족 문화를 보존하고 계승함으로써 애국계몽을 하고자 하였던 적극적이고 실천적인 양상이자 문화사적 결과로 재조명하는 데 목적을 두었다. 그에 따라 먼저 2장에서는 譯官 가풍과 대외 인식의 축적, 재산의 축적과 서화 수집의 물적 조건, 가문 내 서화 전통과 고증적 취향의 형성이라는 세 측면에서 『槿域書畵徵』의 집편 배경과 애국계몽 인식의 형성 조건을 살펴보았다. 다음으로 3장에서는 『근역서화징』 에 드러난 吳世昌의 애국계몽 인식과 그 실천적인 양상을 논의하였는데 오세창의 언론 활동과 계몽운동에 나타난 애국계몽 인식을 검토함으로써 이러한 문제의식이 민족 문화의 체계적 정리를 지향한 『근역서화징』 집편으로 이어지게 되었음을 밝혔다. 아울러 방대한 자료를 교차 검토하는 고증적 글쓰기를 통해 문화사 서술의 체계화를 추구하는 한편 사견 을 배제한 편폭 안배를 통해 객관적 문화사 서술을 지향한 편찬 태도를 함께 분석하였다. 이러한 논의를 통해 『槿域書畵徵』이 애국계몽기라는 시대적 조건 속에서 민족 문화의 위기를 인식한 지식인이 문화적 자강을 모색한 결과임을 확인할 수 있었다. 나아가 『근역서화징』은 오세창의 애국계몽 인식이 집약된 문화사적 저술로 평가될 수 있음을 일면 입증하였다.
