This study examines the linguistic characteristics of the Gyeongnam dialect and analyzes the phonological features and preservation practices of the Changnyeong region as a transitional dialect area. The Gyeongnam dialect exhibits active phonological changes, including the weakening of the contrast between aspirated and plain sounds, the merger of /e/ and /ɛ/, monophthongization, and fortition, while the Changnyeong dialect shares these features and simultaneously displays transitional traits influenced by contact with the Gyeongbuk dialect. Based on this phonological analysis, the study explores preservation practices in Changnyeong, such as academic documentation, dictionary compilation, oral tradition projects, and the use of local educational materials, with the Changnyeong Dialect Dictionary and Our Hometown Changnyeong identified as representative community-based initiatives. In addition, the findings reveal generational differences in language attitudes, as older speakers perceive the dialect as a marker of regional identity, whereas younger speakers regard it as a positive cultural resource. By highlighting the transitional phonological characteristics and cultural potential of the Changnyeong dialect, this study provides foundational insights for the formulation of regional language preservation policies.

이 연구는 경상남도 방언의 언어적 특징을 살펴보고, 그 하위 방언인 창녕 지역을 중심 으로 전이지대 방언의 음운론적 성격과 보존의 실제를 고찰한 것이다. 경남 방언은 격음· 평음 대립의 약화, /ㅔ/-/ㅐ/의 중화, 이중모음의 단모음화, 경음화 등 다양한 음운 변동이 활발하게 나타나는 지역어로서, 비교적 안정적인 음운 체계를 유지하고 있다. 그러나 창녕 지역은 경남 방언의 일반적 특성을 공유하는 동시에 경북 방언과 접경한 지리적 조건으로 인해 서로 다른 음운 요소가 혼재되어 실현되는 전이지대적 성격을 보인다. 이러한 음운적 특징은 창녕 방언이 단순한 하위 변종이 아니라, 방언 간 접촉과 변화를 보여주는 언어사 적 접점임을 시사한다. 본 연구는 이러한 음운 분석을 바탕으로 창녕 지역에서 이루어지고 있는 방언 보존의 양상을 학술적·정책적·교육적 측면에서 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 지역 문인을 중심으로 한 『창녕방언사전』의 편찬, 지역 문화원을 중심으로 한 구술 기록 활동, 그리고 『우리 고장 창녕』과 같은 지역화 교재의 활용은 방언을 생활 언어이자 문화 자산으로 재인식하게 하 는 중요한 보존 실천으로 기능하고 있음을 확인하였다. 아울러 언어 인식 조사에서는 노년 층이 방언을 지역 정체성의 핵심 요소로 인식하는 반면, 젊은층은 이를 긍정적인 문화 자산으로 수용하는 경향을 보임으로써, 방언에 대한 언어 태도가 세대에 따라 변화하고 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 논의를 통해 본 연구는 창녕 방언의 전이지대적 음운 특성과 지역 사회의 보존 실천이 상호 연관되어 있음을 밝히고, 전이지대 방언 연구가 언어 기술을 넘어 지역 문화 와 언어 정책을 함께 조망하는 인문학적 연구로 확장될 수 있음을 제시하였다. 나아가 본 연구는 창녕이라는 단일 지역 사례를 중심으로 하였으나, 그 분석 틀은 경남 북부를 비롯한 타 접경 지역 방언 연구와 지역어 보존 정책 수립을 위한 비교 자료로 활용될 수 있다.
