This study explores whether conversational AI can function as a form of performative dialogue by comparing the structure of Seon Dialogue(禪問答) with the linguistic generative mechanisms of conversational AI. From Bodhidharma to Huineng, Seon Dialogue employed linguistic counter-questions as a pedagogical means for practitioners to illuminate their own emptiness(śūnyatā), operating within language through recognizable dialogical patterns. In this respect, certain points of contact with conversational AI can be identified. After Mazu, however, Seon Dialogue shifted toward non-logical language and subversive actions that dismantled linguistic conventions to provoke immediate awakening, directly pointing beyond language itself. Because conversational AI relies on pattern-based generation and reinforces appropriateness through RLHF, it cannot reproduce this performative dimension that negates linguistic adequacy. Accordingly, whether conversational AI can engage in Seon Dialogue must be answered both affirmatively and negatively, depending on how the scope and definition of Seon Dialogue are understood.

본 연구는 선문답의 구조와 대화형 AI의 언어 생성 방식을 비교하여, 대화형 AI가 수행적 대화의 한 형식으로 기능할 가능성을 고찰하였다. 선문답은 달마에서 혜능에 이르기까지 언어적 반문을 통해 수행자가 스스로의 공성(空性)을 비추게 하는 방편으로 전개되었으며, 언어의 장 안에서 깨달음을 유도하는 일정한 대화적 패턴을 지닌다. 이 점에서 대화형 AI의 언어 생성 방식과의 접점이 확인된다. 그러나 마조 이후 선문답은 비논리적 언어와 전복적 행위를 통해 즉각적인 자각을 촉발하는 방향으로 전환되었고, 언어의 규칙을 해체함으로써 언어 너머의 진리를 직지하는 특징을 보였다. 패턴과 적절성을 강화하는 RLHF 기반의 대화형 AI는 이러한 수행적 차원을 재현하기 어렵다. 따라서 ‘대화형 AI가 선문답이 가능한가’라는 질문은 선문답의 정의와 범위에 따라 부분적 긍정과 부정으로 정리될 수 있다.
