This study empirically reconstructs and systematizes the life and writing activities of Chijae Kim Wŏn-gŭn (1868–1942), a scholar and educator during the modern transition period. Kim Wŏn-gŭn was a figure who deeply studied traditional Hanhak (Chinese classics) while actively embracing Sinhakmun (new learning). He devoted himself to fostering future generations, teaching for over 40 years at Paejae Hakdang and Chŏngsin Girls' School. He engaged deeply with the Canadian missionary James Scarth Gale, participating in early Korean Studies research. In the educational field, he played a pivotal role in the women's independence movement by instilling national consciousness in his students, and he himself suffered imprisonment. This paper confirms his birth year as 1868—which had previously been a subject of debate—by discovering Kim Wŏn-gŭn's family register records, and reconstructs his lineage and life. Furthermore, this study collects and classifies a vast amount of serials, essays, and monographs contributed to various media, presenting a comprehensive list. He carried out prolific writing activities across various fields such as history, literature, women's history, folklore, and geography; this holds significance in terms of an intellectual's response to the era during the Japanese colonial period.

본 논문은 근대 전환기의 학자이자 교육자였던 止齋金瑗根(1868~1942)의 생애와 저술 활동을 實證的으로 복원하고 체계화한 것으로, 본격 적인 김원근 연구를 위한 기초 조사 결과의 보고이다. 김원근은 전통 漢 學을 수학한 한편으로 新學問을 적극적으로 수용한 인물로, 培材學堂과 貞臣女學校에서 40여 년간 교편을 잡으며 후학 양성에 헌신하였다. 그는 캐나다 출신 선교사 J. S. Gale과 깊이 교류하며 초기 한국학 연구에 관여 하였고, 교육 현장에서는 제자들에게 民族意識을 고취하여 여성 독립운동 의 산파 역할을 했으며 본인 또한 옥고를 치렀다. 본고에서는 김원근의 호적 자료를 발굴하여 그간 이설이 분분했던 김 원근의 생년을 1868년으로 확정하고 그의 가계와 생애를 재구성하였다. 또한 다양한 매체에 기고한 방대한 분량의 연재물과 논설 및 단행본 자료 를 수집, 분류하여 그 특징을 정리하였다. 그는 역사, 문학, 여성사, 민속, 지리 등 다방면에 걸쳐 왕성한 저술 활동을 전개하였으며, 이는 일제강점 기 지식인의 시대 대응이라는 측면에서 중요한 의미가 있다고 생각된다.
