Transhumanists maintain that we can extend our lives almost eternally by duplicating our brain patterns to a different body, a technique known as mind uploading (or uploading). In contrast, Schneider claims that uploading amounts to self-killing because our survival depends on the instantiation of brain patterns rather than duplicating the brain patterns themselves. Shin argues that Schneider is mistaken in failing to distinguish between personal identity and what matters in survival. At the same time, Shin claims that the kind of uploading that transfers human brain patterns into an android robotic body, as per Shapiro’s embodied mind theory, cannot preserve what matters. According to him, what matters can be preserved only when the information of the brain patterns is transferred to the same type of body. Shin’s argument originates from a specific understanding of causation that forms the basis of psychological connectedness. However, this understanding inevitably leads to psychological sequentialism, the view that what matters consists in psychological similarity (as opposed to psychological continuity), which does not require any cause. Based on this observation, I argue that, pace Shin, what matters is not preserved even if the brain information is transferred to the same type of body.

트랜스 휴머니스트들은 우리 두뇌의 정보 패턴을 다른 신체에 복제하는 마음 업로딩을 통해 우리의 생명을 제한 없이 연장할 수 있다고 주장한다. 반면 슈나이더는 우리의 생존은 정보 패턴 자체가 아니라 그것이 예화된 결과인 개별자 차원에서 고려될 문제이므로 업로딩 은 자살 행위나 마찬가지라고 본다. 신상규는 슈나이더의 주장이 개인 동일성과 생존에 있 어 중요한 것을 구분하지 않은 데서 비롯된 잘못된 논증이라고 비판하면서도, 샤피로의 체 화된 마음 이론에 근거하여 인간 유기체의 두뇌를 안드로이드 신체에 이전하는 방식의 업로 딩은 생존과 관련하여 중요하게 여기는 것을 보전하지 못하며 큰 손실을 동반한다고 주장한 다. 신상규에 따르면, 오직 같은 종류의 신체로 정보가 전송되었을 때만 실질적인 생존을 보전할 수 있다. 신상규의 주장은 생존에 있어 중요한 것의 기반이 되는 심리적 연결의 인과 성에 대한 특정한 해석을 받아들인 결과이다. 그런데 이러한 해석은 생존에 있어 중요한 것 은 인과를 내포한 심리적 연결/연속성이 아니라 인과가 결여된 심리적 유사성에 기반해 있 다는 심리적 순차주의로 연결될 수밖에 없다. 이에 근거하여 필자는 신상규의 주장과는 달 리 두뇌의 정보 패턴이 같은 종류의 신체로 전송되는 경우에도 생존에 있어 중요한 것이 보 전되지 않는다고 주장한다.
