This paper examines the life and independence movement of Kim Bong-ryul, the abbot of Jikjisa Temple during the late Japanese colonial period, based on specific data. While research on Kim Bong-ryul has been lacking, the author intends to integrate his life into the history of the Buddhist independence movement and the modern history of Jikjisa Temple. To this end, the author focuses on the following aspects in his writing: First, I aimed to compile the full picture of Kim Bong-ryul's life and give it meaning. Second, I organized Kim Bong-ryul's independence movement by topic. He participated in the March 1st Movement at Haeinsa Temple, joined the Shinheung Military Academy in Manchuria, raised military funds, and participated as abbot of Jikjisa Temple and in the Mandang movement. Third, I examined his relationship with Kim Tae-sin, referred to as Kim Bong-ryul's son, and the issue of Kim Il-yeop. I hope this paper, written with these principles, will serve as a reference for research on the history of the Buddhist independence movement, the March 1st Movement at Haeinsa Temple, Jikjisa Temple in the modern era, the activities of Mandang, and Kim Il-yeop.

이 논고는 일제 말기 직지사 주지이었던 김봉률의 삶과 독립운동을 구체적인 자료에 근거하여 살핀 고찰이다. 지금껏 김봉률에 대한 연구는 부재하였으나, 필자는 이 글을 통하여 그의 생애를 불교 독립운동사, 직지사 근대사에 편입하려고 의도하였다. 이런 취지에서 필자는 다음의 측면을 유의하여 서술하였다. 첫째, 김봉률 삶의 전모를 정리하고 그 의미를 부여하고자 하였다. 둘째, 김봉률의 독립운동을 주제별로 정리하고자 하였다. 그는 해인사 3⋅1운동, 만주 신흥무관학교의 입교 및 군자금 모금 활동, 직지사 주지 및 만당의 활동 등이다. 셋째, 김봉률의 아들로 지칭된 김태신과의 인연, 그리고 김일엽의 문제이다. 이상과 같은 취지에서 서술된 이 논고가 불교 독립운동사, 해인사 3⋅1운동, 근대기 직지사, 만당의 활동, 김일엽 연구 등의 연구에 참고가 되길 기대한다.
