This paper is a study on Father Maeusa regarding the treasure 'Kim Gu's Signed Taegukgi', which has never been addressed before. The main figure who played a significant role in designating the 'Taegukgi handwritten by Kim Gu,' which begins with 'I ask Reverend Maeusa,' as a treasure was Charles Meeus from Belgium. Father Maeusa greatly respected Chairman Kim Gu. Through multiple meetings with Chairman Kim Gu as the son of the righteous man Ahn Jung-geun, Ahn Jun-saeng gained comradely trust through interpretation. Afterwards, in 1940, he attended the farewell ceremony for the Korean Liberation Army Headquarters' move to the front lines along with Chairman Kim Gu, showing deep interest and solidarity with Korea's independence movement. In 1941, when Father Maeusa was going on a business trip to the United States, he was given a handwritten note appealing for support for the independence movement on the Korean flag. And he asked to show it to the Korean compatriots in the United States. The Taegukgi was delivered to Mrs. Lee Hye-ryun, the widow of Ahn Chang-ho, one year later. Subsequently, it was donated to the Independence Hall by descendants, giving it historical value when it was designated as a treasure in 2021. Father Maeusa did not simply deliver the 'Kim Gu signed Taegukgi'. During the Japanese colonial period, he supported Korea's independence movement in China. He was a true supporter of Korea's independence movement who empathized with the suffering of our people. Nevertheless, nothing was known about Father Maeusa's birth, death, or major activities. This paper chronologically documents the activities of Father Maeusa based on materials the author uncovered from foreign Catholic sources. Through this paper, I hope that his name and deeds will be brought to light, albeit belatedly, and that he will be highly regarded as a figure in the hidden independence movement in history.

본고는 지금까지 심층적으로 논의되지 않았던 보물 ｢김구 서명문 태극기(金九 署名文 太極旗)｣의 ‘매우사’ 신부에 대한 연구이다. 김구 서명문 태극기는 2021년 10월 25일 보물로 지정된 국가유산이다. 이 태극기가 보물로 지정되기까지는 벨기에 출신 샤를 미우스(Charles Meeus) 신부의 역할이 매우 중요하였다. 매우사 신부는 김구 주석을 존경하였고, 안중근 의사의 아들 안준생의 통역으로 여러 차례 김구 주석과 면담 끝에 동지적 신뢰를 쌓았다. 그런 신뢰로 1940년 한국광복군 총사령부가 항전을 결의하고 일본 주둔 지역으로 이전할 때 우빈 주교가 마련한 환송회에 김구 주석과 나란히 참석하여 한국의 광복운동에 깊은 관심과 연대의식을 함께 하였다. 1941년 매우사 신부가 미국으로 출국하기 전 김구 주석을 방문하였을 때, 김구 주석은 태극기 여백에 광복 활동 지원을 호소하는 친필을 써서 미주 한인 동포들에게 보여 줄 것을 부탁하였다. 매우사 신부는 이 태극기를 1년 동안 지니고 있다가 로스앤젤레스의 고(故) 안창호 선생의 미망인 이혜련 여사에게 전달했고, 그 후 후손이 독립기념관에 기증하여 2021년 보물로 지정되는 역사적 가치를 갖게 되었다. 매우사 신부는 단순히 김구 서명문 태극기를 전달한 인물을 넘어, 일제 강점기 중국에서 한국의 독립운동을 지지하고 우리 민족의 아픔에 공감했던 진정한 대한민국의 광복운동 조력가였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 국내에서는 매우사 신부의 생몰연대와 주요 행적에 대하여 전혀 알려진 바가 없었다. 그동안 알려지지 않았던 매우사 신부의 행적을 추적하고자, 필자는 수년간 외국의 가톨릭 관련 자료들을 조사하였다. 그 결과 도서·신문·논문 등 16건, 사진 57매, 웹사이트 6건, 영상 자료 2건(영화 1종, 동영상 1종)을 발굴하였다. 본고는 발굴 자료들을 토대로 매우사 신부의 출생에서 무덤까지의 행적을 연대기식으로 서술한 것이다. 그리고 본고를 통해 그는 비록 벨기에 출신 신부이지만 우리 역사 속 숨겨진 광복운동의 한 조력가로서 재평가되기를 기대한다.
