The rapid urbanization of modern society and the shift toward nuclear family structures have brought significant changes to traditional Korean ceremonial cultures, particularly in funeral rites. Funeral culture has undergone a swift transition from "home-based rituals" held within the household to "socialized rituals" conducted in hospital-annexed or specialized professional facilities. Consequently, funeral halls have expanded beyond mere ceremonial spaces for mourning into complex service environments that support the emotional healing of the bereaved and facilitate social interaction among mourners. The physical space of funeral halls has continuously evolved in response to these socio-cultural demands. Early funeral halls, however, faced limitations in ensuring user convenience and privacy due to their narrow, function-oriented spatial configurations. Accordingly, this research empirically analyzes the floor plan typologies and changes in the scale of memorial and reception spaces by tracing cases of funeral halls constructed from the 1980s to the present. The ultimate goal of this study is to establish the evolutionary trajectory of funeral spaces and provide foundational data for the future planning of user-centered funeral facilities.

현대 사회의 급격한 도시화와 가족 구조의 핵가족화는 우리 사회의 전통적인 관혼상제 문화에 큰 변화를 가져왔다. 특히 장례 문화는 과거 가정 내에서 치러지던 '가정 의례' 중심에서 병원 부속 또는 전문 시설을 이용 하는 '사회적 의례' 중심으로 급격히 전환되었다. 이에 따라 장례식장은 단순히 고인을 추모하는 의례 공간을 넘 어, 유족의 슬픔을 치유하고 조문객과의 사회적 교류가 이루어지는 복합적인 서비스 공간으로 그 기능이 확대되었 다. 장례식장의 물리적 공간은 이러한 사회·문화적 요구에 대응하며 지속적으로 변화해 왔다. 그러나 초기 장례식 장은 기능 중심의 협소한 공간 구성으로 인해 사용자의 편의성이나 프라이버시 확보에 한계가 있었다. 따라서 본 연구는 1980년대부터 현재에 이르기까지 시대별로 건립된 장례식장의 사례를 추적하여, 분향 및 접객 공간의 평면 유형과 규모 변화를 실증적으로 분석하고자 한다. 이를 통해 장례 공간의 변천 과정을 정립하고, 향후 사용자 중 심의 미래지향적 장례 시설 계획을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하는 데 그 목적이 있다.
