The Taegeukgi was recognized as a national heritage in 2008 and was designated as a national treasure in 2021. However, compared to that symbolism, it has not yet been designated as a national treasure. The author recently raised this issue, arguing for the designation of the Jingwansa Taegeukgi as a national treasure, and approached it from two perspectives to present the necessity of its elevation to national treasure status. The first is the inevitability of discovering the Jingwansa Taegeukgi. The discovery of the Taegukgi at Jingwansa is not a trivial event, but is deeply connected to mysterious inevitability. In other words, the reconstruction of Jingwansa, the Taeguk stairs of the Daeungjeon Hall, the monk Baekcho-wol, and the Chilseonggak had already been connected with the Taegeukgi. The second is a consideration of its historical and academic value. The Jingwan sa Taegukgi was drawn over the Japanese flag with a brush to express anti-Japanese sentiment in response to Japan's invasion. Among those Taegeukgi, it lasted the longest. It has been 100 years since monk Baekcho-wol uniquely modified the Japanese flag and used the Taegeukgi as a nonviolent means of resistance and independence movement. This has great historical and academic value. Therefore, it raised the justification for being promoted to a national treasure. The treasure Jinkwansa Taegukgi fully meets the criteria for designation as a national cultural heritage and is entirely worthy of being a national treasure. It must now be upgraded to a national treasure and preserved.

태극기는 대한민국의 권위와 존엄을 상징하는 국기이다. 태극기가 국가 유산으로 인정된 시기는 2008년이고, 보물로 지정된 시기는 2021년이다. 하지만 그 상징성에 비해 아직까지 국보로 지정되지 않았다. 필자는 이러 한 문제의식을 제기하며, 진관사 태극기를 국보로 지정할 것을 주장하였 고, 이를 위해 두 가지 관점에서 접근하여 국보 승격의 필요성을 강조하였 다. 첫째, 진관사 태극기를 재조명하는 데 연구의 초점을 맞추었다. 본 고에 서는 역사적 맥락에서 진관사의 재건 및 보물 진관사 태극기의 현황과 백 초월 스님과의 관계를 면밀히 살펴보았다. 필자의 연구 결과, 진관사 태극기의 발견은 단순한 우연이 아닌, 불가사 의한 필연이 내재된 것으로 분석되었다. 즉, 진관사의 재건, 대웅전의 태극 계단, 백초월 스님의 진관사 주석(住錫), 칠성각은 태생적으로 태극기와 피할 수 없는 역사적, 시대적 필연으로 연결되어 있었음이 확인된다. 이러 한 규명은 불교적 세계관에서 초월적인 의미를 지닌다고 해석될 수 있다. 두 번째, 진관사 태극기의 역사적 및 학술적 가치에 주목하였다. 진관사 태극기는 일제의 침탈에 항거하여 항일의 뜻을 담아 일장기 위에 먹붓으 로 덧칠해 제작된 현존 최고(最古)의 태극기이다. 백초월 스님이 비폭력 항일 독립운동의 일환으로 일장기를 개조하여 사 용했다는 사실은 독보적인 희소성을 부여하며, 백 년 이상의 유구한 역사 적 배경은 그 자체의 변천사 연구를 넘어 일제강점기 저항 연구의 학술적 가치를 한층 강화한다. 이러한 객관적인 가치를 바탕으로 국보 승격의 당위성을 주장한다. 보물 진관사 태극기는 국가지정 문화유산의 지정기준에 국보로서 전혀 손색이 없다. 국가의 상징인 태극기가 아직 국보로 지정되지 않은 현실을 직시하 며, 이제 국보로 승격하여 보존해야 할 지혜와 도약이 필요하다고 본다.
