This paper explores the Seon (Zen) thought of Venerable Dae-eun Kim Tae-heup (1894–1989), one of the representative Buddhist scholars of modern Korean Buddhism and the first Buddhist missionary (pogyo-sa). Alongside Yi Neunghwa, Dae-eun Kim Tae-heup exerted a significant influence on the formation of modern Buddhist studies in Korea. However, due to his pro-Japanese activities around the 1940s, scholarly research on his Buddhist thought has remained relatively underdeveloped. While the pro-Japanese conduct of Buddhist figures during the colonial period deserves critical assessment from a nationalist perspective, it is also necessary to approach the lives of monks who lived under Japanese rule from a variety of interpretative viewpoints. This study presents a preliminary examination of the Seon thought of Dae-eun, also known by his sobriquet Soha, who lived through the turbulent transformation of the twentieth century. Written from an apologetic perspective on Buddhism, this paper unfolds its discussion in two main areas: first, an exploration of Dae-eun’s life as a Seon master; and second, an analysis of his Seon thought as expressed in his writings. The first part investigates Dae-eun’s dharma transmission, enlightenment, and records of dharma dialogues and exchanges with other Seon masters. The second part focuses on his Collected Works of Dae-eun Daejongsa (comprising seven volumes), which encompass a wide range of studies in Buddhist scholarship. Among these, this paper centers on his writings related to Seon thought, elucidating their content, characteristics, and significance.

본 고는 한국 근대불교의 대표적인 불교학자이자 최초의 포교사인 대은 대종사 김태흡(1894~1989)의 선사상을 밝힌 글이다. 이능화와 더불어 대은 김태흡은 근대불교학 형성에 끼친 지대한 영향에도 불구하고 1940년대 를 전후하여 행했던 친일 행적으로 인하여 그의 불교사상에 대한 연구가 미진했던 측면이 있다. 민족주의적 관점에서 불교계의 친일 행위 또한 비 판과 단죄가 이루어져야 하지만 일제 강점기를 살았던 승려들의 삶에 대해서는 다양한 관점에서 접근할 필요성도 있다고 생각한다. 본 고는 20세기 격변기를 살았던 선사 대은 소하의 선사상에 대한 시론 적 성격의 글이며, 불교에 대한 호교론적 입장에서 쓰인 글이다. 본론에서 는 크게 두 가지 방면에서 논의를 전개하였다. 하나는 선사로서의 대은의 삶을 밝힌 것이며, 다른 하나는 대은의 저술 속에 나타난 선사상을 밝힌 것이다. 선사로서의 대은의 면모는 대은의 법계와 깨달음 그리고 다른 선사들과의 선문답 및 법거량 등의 사실을 통하여 논구하였다. 총 7권에 이 르는 『대은대종사문집』은 방대한 분량으로 불교학의 다방면에 대한 연구 물이 수록되어 있다. 이 가운데 선사상에 대해 저술한 내용을 중심으로 하 여 그의 선사상에 대한 내용과 특징 및 의의에 대하여 논구하였다.
