Silence is not merely the absence of speech but can be understood as the outcome of meaning-making produced within specific contexts and conditions. When the press employs the signifier “silence” in news articles, it does more than describe a simple fact; through its usage and context, it implicitly conveys a particular actor’s attitude, responsibility, emotional state, or political implications. This study analyzes how discourses related to “silence” were constructed in media coverage during the emergency martial law situation that unfolded in South Korea in 2024. In a moment of political crisis marked by the declaration of martial law, “silence” functioned not as a mere absence of utterance but as a discursive sign carrying diverse political, emotional, and ethical implications. This study draws on 1,747 news articles and editorials containing the term “silence,” published by major Korean media outlets from December 3, 2024, which was the day martial law was declared, to April 5, 2025, which was the day after the Constitutional Court upheld the National Assembly’s impeachment of the president. Using a combination of text-mining techniques and semantic cluster analysis, the study examines the characteristics of these articles. According to TF-IDF results, discourses on “silence” were structured around keywords associated with specific actors such as the president, the military, the prosecution, the political establishment, the press, and citizens, demonstrating that “silence” was invoked across a wide range of contexts. The subsequent CONCOR cluster analysis produced four major semantic groups. Each of these groups corresponded to structures of meaning related to the strategic silence of power-holders, civic participation and political evasion, conflict between the government and opposition leaders, and the Constitutional Court’s judgment and judicial neutrality. These configurations of meaning varied depending on the ideological orientation of the media outlet. Overall, this study shows that the signifier “silence” functions as a mediating symbol of discourse during political crisis and reveals how related news reports and editorials reconstruct political reality.

침묵은 단순한 발화의 부재가 아니라 특정한 맥락과 조건 속에서 발생한 의미 작용의 결과로 볼 수 있다. 언론이 기사에서 ‘침묵’이라는 기표를 사용하는 순간, 그것은 단지 사 실을 묘사만 하는 것이 아니라 그 단어의 사용과 그 맥락을 통해 특정 주체의 태도나 책 임, 감정 상태, 정치적 함의를 암시하게 된다. 이 연구는 2024년 한국에서 발생한 비상계 엄 상황을 배경으로, 언론 보도에서 ‘침묵’ 관련 담론이 어떻게 구성되었는지를 분석한 다. 계엄령이라는 정치적 위기 국면에서 ‘침묵’은 단순한 발화 부재가 아니라 다양한 정 치적, 감정적, 윤리적 함의를 지닌 담론적 기호로 작동하였다. 본 연구는 계엄이 선포된 2024년 12월 3일부터 국회의 대통령 탄핵이 헌법재판소로부터 인용된 다음날인 2025년 4월 5일까지 발행된 국내 주요 언론사의 뉴스와 사설 중 ‘침묵’이 포함된 기사 1,747건을 대상으로 텍스트마이닝 기법과 의미 군집분석을 결합하여 그 특성을 분석했다. ‘침묵’ 관련 언론 보도와 사설은 TF-IDF 분석 결과 대통령, 군, 검찰, 정치권, 언론, 시민 등 특정 행위자들과 결합된 핵심어들을 중심으로 의미 구성이 이루어졌으며, 이를 통해 ‘침묵’이 다양한 맥락에서 소환됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 이어진 CONCOR 군집분석에서는 네 개의 주요 의미 군이 도출되었고, 각각은 권력자의 전략적 침묵, 시민 참여와 정치권의 회피, 정부와 야당 지도자 간의 대립, 헌법재판소의 판단과 사법적 중립성이라는 의미 구조를 형성하였다. 또한 의미 군집이 진보 성향 매체와 보수 성향 매체에서 서로 다른 방식으로 배치되고 강조되는 양상을 비교하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 의미 구성은 언론사의 이념 적 성향에 따라 상이하게 나타났다. 본 연구는 ‘침묵’이라는 기표가 정치적 위기 속에서 담론의 매개 기호로 기능하며, 그와 관련된 언론 보도와 사설이 정치적 현실을 어떻게 재 구성하는지를 보여준다.
