This paper examines the crises experienced by American missionaries and their responses through thirty-six telegrams sent by missionaries in provincial areas in Korea to the U.S. Legation in Seoul between 1891 and 1905. These telegrams are part of the Records of Foreign Service Posts of the U.S. Department of State, preserved in the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration(NARA), and have not previously been utilized in Korean Protestant Mission scholarship. The thirtysix telegrams relate to a total of eighteen incidents and can be categorized into four groups: (1) cases involving physical threats to missionaries, (2) cases of persecution of Korean converts, (3) reports of missionary deaths, and (4) requests for travel permits. Although the telegrams do not provide a complete account of each incident, they complement existing materials and reveal new facts.

본 논문은 1891년과 1905년 사이에 미국인 선교사들이 지방 활동 중 서울의 미국공사관으로 발송된 36통의 전보를 통해 선교사들이 겪었던 위기 상황과 대응 방식을 살펴보았다. 이 전보 기록물은 미국 국립문서기록 관리청(NARA)이 소장하고 있는 「미국 국무부 재외공관 문서(Records of Foreign Service Posts of the U.S. Department of State)」에 포함된 자료 로, 한국 개신교 선교 연구에서는 이전까지 활용된 적이 없다. 36통의 전 보는 총 18개 사건을 배경으로 하고 있으며, (1) 선교사가 경험한 신체적 위협 사건, (2) 한국인 교인 박해 사건, (3) 선교사 사망 보고, (4) 여행 허 가증 발급 요청 등 네 범주로 분류된다. 비록 이 전보들이 각 사건의 전모를 모두 보여주지는 않지만 기존 자료를 보완하고 새로운 사실을 드러내기 도 한다.
